Ana de Armas finally enters the John Wick universe with Ballerina, a vengeful saga about a dancer-turned-assassin trying to avenge her father's death. This is the first film in the franchise not headlined by Keanu Reeves. So, the expectations were high about the Blade Runner 2049 star's entry in this action blockbuster series.
Directed by Len Wiseman, Ballerina is about to hit the theaters on June 6, 2025. So, a day before, the early reviews have started pouring in on Rotten Tomatoes. The actioner currently holds a 77% score on the website based on 84 reviews. The RT score might change in the following days as more reviews start showing up, but the early reviews hint that the film has received a promising reception, much like its predecessors.
Yet, Ballerina's RT score is the lowest in the film franchise, which began in 2014. The first Keanu Reeves starrer earned an 86% score, the second one and the third one earned 89% each, and the fourth one earned a 94% score. If we're talking about the spin-off projects set in this universe, De Armas' film ranks higher in this list than the Peacock miniseries, The Continental.
Besides, even though Len Wiseman's directorial ranks lowest in the film's list, its score is based on fewer than 100 reviews. The rest of the films have scores based on 200-400 reviews. So, Wiseman's film might go past other films in the franchise. Despite the minor gap in these scores, the De Armas starrer will still most likely be certified fresh soon.
How will Ballerina fare at the box office?
Rotten Tomatoes scores offer an idea about the level of positive (or negative) reception for a film, but they do not always impact a film's performance. This year, A Minecraft Movie showed this by shattering box office records despite receiving a Rotten verdict. So, Ballerina's RT score is not a direct indicator of its box office performance.
The Ana de Armas starrer is still inching toward a positive score on the website, much like other films in the franchise. That makes it one of the few action film series to have received love from critics. While they seem to be enjoying this flick, the audience might enjoy it as well.
The early projections for the opening weekend from Variety hint at a $28-30 million start for the film in the North American market. Internationally, it is expected to fare almost the same. That is considered a fair start for this actioner, even if it won't cross the debut earning figures for John Wick 4, the most recent film in the franchise. However, by then, Keanu Reeves had amassed a huge fan following for his vengeful role, and it might take a while for De Armas to find a similar footing in the universe.
