Betty Harford, the esteemed actress who appeared in the television series Dynasty and The Paper Chase, has died at the age of 98.

The announcement of her death was made on Facebook by her friend Wendy Mitchell, who said that Harford passed away peacefully on the afternoon of November 2 in the presence of family. Mitchell referred to Harford, in her tribute, as a "wonderful woman and talented actress,".

Mitchell added that Harford had been living in Carpinteria in California. She said that she had been recovering from the flu for the last two months. However, her cause of death has not been revealed.

Tributes have been pouring in from her fans and colleagues, who are remembering her for her roles in Dynasty, particularly as Carrington family cook Hilda Gunnerson. In another iconic show, The Paper Chase, she portrayed the character of Mrs Nottingham. She was the secretary of Professor Charles Kingsfield.

Betty Harford was known for her extensive career, which spanned many films and television shows. Born in January 1927 in New York, Harford started her acting career in the 1950s when she performed in radio dramas such as Gunsmoke and Crime Classics.

She later transitioned into television, appearing in anthology series (Fireside Theatre, Luv Video Theatre, Alfred Hitchcock Presents), drama series (Dr Kildare, The Big Valley, Room 222 and Mrs Columbo), and specials (The Great Adventure). Among her other roles, she appeared in the TV version of Gunsmoke and did voice work for a cartoon called Gumby.

She later joined the UCLA Theatre Group, founded by John Houseman and others, where she honed her stage skills. She got the opportunity to work alongside Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint.

Betty Harford became a renowned figure with her roles as Ms Nottingham in Paper Chase and Mrs Gunnerson as the Carrington family cook in Dynasty. The Paper Chase centred on James Hart, a first-year law student at Harvard Law School.

The original Dynasty TV show, in which Betty Harford starred, aired for nine seasons. It was a show about the wealthy Carrington family, who were involved in the oil business. Blake Carrington was the central figure of the show. It also focused on his new wife, Krystle Jennings, who was his former secretary.

Harford is also known for her work in films such as Wild and Innocent, Inside Daisy Clover, Spartacus, Signpost to Murder, The China Syndrome, and Win, Place or Steal. Her role as Gloria Clover Goslett in Inside Daisy Clover was widely appreciated by the audience. She was depicted as the older sister of the main character Daisy Clover, who escaped their troubled home to marry a wealthy man.

On the personal front, she was first married to Oliver Andrews, a sculptor based in California. They shared a son named Chris. She later remarried Hungarian actor Alex de Naszody. They were married until his death in 1996. She is survived by her son, Chris and her grandsons.
