Scott Derrickson brought the main antagonist of The Black Phone (2021) perfectly in its sequel, Black Phone 2. In the first film, we were introduced to the child abductor and killer called the Grabber, played by the versatile Ethan Hawke.
In the first film, he was killed by his last victim in the movie, Finney, played by Mason Thames. Finney broke his neck, but it seems like it wasn't enough to break this malicious man's spirit, and his spirit returns to haunt them. But then kids in the film again overpower him.
While Finney remains a major protagonist in the movie, the story shifts the focus more towards his sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). She is the one who fights back against the Grabber and finally puts the story to an end. He's sent down in freezing water, which might have finally put a halt to his story for good now.
What's the motivation behind the Grabber's hunt for Gwen in Black Phone 2?
The Scott Derrickson movie isn't even cut as a slasher film despite being a slasher film. The main reason for that is the kill count, which is zero. Whatever killing there had to be done, it was done in the previous film.
In Black Phone 2, the Grabber certainly had a malicious intent to kill the brother and sister pair, especially the sister. The main motive behind this is that Finney had made the Grabber kill his brother in the last film by tricking him, and now, to take revenge for that, he wants to kill Finney's sister to even the odds.
The biggest reveal was the Grabber's connection with Gwen and Finney's mother
While the fans were more interested in learning how the Grabber's return, there was an unexpected reveal in the movie. The Grabber had a connection with Gwen and Finney's mother. Long story short, he killed her.
We were told in the first film that their mother had committed suicide, but Black Phone 2 spills the beans and shows us that he used to work at the same place as hers and she found something malicious about him. So he killed her and framed it as a suicide.
How did the Grabber's story come to an end in Black Phone 2?
The Grabber is an invisible entity roaming the Alpine Lake winter camp, returned from hell, as he reveals in the movie. Well, only the evil remains.
The main issue for our protagonists in Black Phone 2 is that only Gwen can see him in her dreams. And the only way to weaken him is to get close to the source of his power, which is the three victims he had killed in the past. Their lingering (and probably fearing) souls are what's giving him the power.
Thankfully, all of those bodies have been found and laid (finally) to rest. After the final fight, the brother-sister pair manages to send down the entity into the frozen lake, which finally seems to close the Grabber's chapter.
That said, a sequel isn't likely, but there's a lot to explore about the Grabber's past. So if there's something we should be looking forward to, it should be a prequel, which would certainly be interesting.
