Parents should keep their children away from Yorgos Lanthimos films them due to mature themes. Bugonia is no different. The new film puts two conspiracy theorists at the core of the story who are convinced that a CEO of a pharmaceutical company is an alien trying to destroy earth.

As of this writing, the movie is rated R due to violent content and some mature language used in it. IMDb gives a quick breakdown of this, which presents in detail as to why children shouldn't be allowed to watch this film.

There's mild nudity in it, where a few brief shots of naked people are shown. Additionally, there are also implications of child molestation in it. A few terms, like the F word and more, are used in it. Use of hypodermic needles is portrayed in addition to wine drinking and mention of cannabis.

But the biggest reason the film is rated R is the gore and violence in it. There are shots of bloody surgery and a man's head flying in the air after he blows himself up with a bomb, which is something that will be unsettling for kids.

A woman is also electrocuted before blood comes out of her mouth, and a man blows himself up with a shotgun. The blood is everywhere following this scene.

What is Bugonia about?

The latest absurdist black comedy by Yorgos Lanthimos is mainly about Teddy, played by Jesse Plemons, who is a conspiracy theorist trying to save the Earth. Though he don't think of himself as a hero, he is a hero in his own right.

Emma Stone plays Michelle Fuller in the film, who is a high-powered CEO of the pharma company called Auxolith. Teddy, alongside his intellectually disabled cousin, Don (Aidan Delbis), think that she is an alien queen and plans to destroy humanity.

They kidnap her and keep her in a basement while taking all the precautions so that she is unable to contact her mothership. This mainly includes shaving her head. While all of this is going on, it is also revealed that Teddy's mother was a test subject of Fuller's company in Bugonia and fell into a coma due to that.

The bleak ending of Bugonia is also hopeful

While the ending of the Yorgos Lanthimos film leaves the fans pulling their hair, there is also hope in it, according to some. The film's director is among the ones who see hope in it.

In an interview with Business Insider, he explained that,

"I think it's hopeful. I think even if it's quite sad, it allows for some hope to start again, in a way, and maybe make things better. I think it allows for that kind of positivity."

We won't spoil what happens at the end for you so you can see and interpret the story as you deem fit. But, remember, it is not for your kids!
