Paramount to develop Call of Duty film adaptation
As per a Variety report, Paramount will be developing a film adaptation of the first-person shooter video game series Call of Duty. The studio has signed a deal with Activision, the game's developer, to create, produce, and eventually distribute a live-action feature film on the COD series. To date, the series comprises more than 20 video games.
This news comes just a month after Paramount announced its merger with Skydance for $8 billion. In October 2023, Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard, which is Activision's parent company. Despite being a part of Microsoft Gaming, it continues to work independently. The game series has sold over 500 million copies worldwide. Despite its success, the series has not seen any film or television adaptation till now.
David Ellison, who is the chairman and CEO of Paramount, put out a statement and said:
“As a lifelong fan of ‘Call of Duty’ this is truly a dream come true. From the first Allied campaigns in the original ‘Call of Duty,’ through ‘Modern Warfare’ and ‘Black Ops,’ I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”
Activision president Rob Kostich added,
"With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started."
He continued:
"Throughout its history, ‘Call of Duty’ has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible ‘Call of Duty’ games remains unwavering"
The series consists of several installments, including Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Ghosts, Infinite Warfare, and World at War, among others. Over the years, it has been developed by Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch. Other developers were later involved in creating spin-offs in the series. By 2022, all the games generated a total of around $30 billion in revenue.
