Cedric Irving Jr. faces a murder charge in the death of football coach John Beam, with officials reporting he confessed to the shooting. Beam died on November 14 after being shot in the head at Laney College, California. While he was being taken to the hospital, he couldn't survive.
Following the incident, Cedric was arrested after police used surveillance cameras to recognize him and later admitted to investigators that he had shot John Beam with a gun.
During the investigation, police didn't find any past criminal record for Cedric, making this his first offense. Cedric Irving Jr. is twenty-seven years old.
If found guilty, he could go to prison for fifty years or more. As of now, the exact reason why Cedric shot John Beam remains unclear. However, according to multiple sources, as reported by the East Bay Times, Cedric Irving Jr. believed Beam was using witchcraft against him.
It's also reported that he does not have an attorney at this time. Additionally, Cedric wasn't a student at the college, which adds another unexpected layer to the case.
Alameda County District Attorney talks about John Beam

In a statement reported by NBC, Ursula Jones Dickson, Alameda County District Attorney, talking about Beam, said:
"He really was the best of Oakland. He always had the time. He always had the energy. He always had the heart for the work. People who do the work in the community — with anybody they come into contact with — that's coach Beam's M.O. The contact that he would have with anyone around the school would not be unusual."
In another statement, reported by the Oakland Side, Dickson said:
"My goal is to try to make people aware that there is absolutely some accountability for carrying a gun in Oakland. It’s unacceptable that we have children in our community who, now, this is their norm"
After Cedric Irving Jr.'s arrest in the shooting of John Beam, Cedric's brother said the news came as a shock to the family. In a statement reported by NBC Bay Area, he said:
"It made me tear up. I couldn't believe he would have done such a thing like this. I wish he would have just came to his family for help or advice or just anything because we're family."
Cedric Irving Jr.'s brother, Samuel, also said he had no idea Cedric Irving Jr. had a weapon.
