Recently, a rumor has been circulating about Luca Guadagnino's thoughts on American Psycho that the main character of the story might be gender-swapped, and Margot Robbie could step in to play the role. However, the new updates are sidelining this rumor, as some sources have told Deadline this.
Now the focus will come again to the speculations of the actor who is being eyed for the role. For that, Austin Butler has been the top choice to play Patrick Bateman. Although Jacob Elordi, who recently portrayed The Creature in Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein, was also said to be in the queue for it.
Several rumors have emerged in the past, which are still ongoing, but nothing such has been made official as of this writing. All we know of it is that Guadagnino is directing the movie with a screenplay written by Scott Z. Burns.
Austin Butler is better for a different American Psycho role

Despite these rumors, the actor is better suited for a different role in the story, according to Kerry Barden, the casting director of the original movie. He thinks that Austin Butler would be great as another American Psycho character, dubbed Paul Allen. A role that Jared Leto portrayed in the original film.
Barden explains the reason for this by saying,
"I would cast Austin in Jared’s role because he’s that beautiful, and that’s why we cast Jared, is because he’s that beautiful. Jared is certainly a great actor as well, and obviously, Austin has a lot of depth as an actor, too. But not every person has that kind of beauty."
In the 2000 film, Leto's Paul Allen becomes the victim of Christian Bale's Patrick Bateman after a series of incidents. Allen is living a life that Bateman dreams of, despite being an investment banker.
First, Allen outshines Bateman while in a meeting where every member there flaunts a business card. Later, they go for a supper after Allen mistakes Bateman for a different person, which is where things escalate.
This is when Allen and Bateman visit the latter's apartment, where Bateman kills Allen with an axe. The scene has become a subject of memes, which pops up frequently in feeds on social platforms.
Scott Z. Burns has written a beautiful script for the film

In April, we got another promising update from Luca Guadagnino about his take on American Psycho. In an interview with Collider at CinemaCon, he told them that Scott has written a beautiful script for the movie. He said,
"I can only tell you that the book by Bret Easton Ellis is a seminal book for me that I read when it came out in 1990, so I must have been 19 or 20. It's something that I think is going to give me the opportunity of doing something that I have not done yet. It's a beautiful script being written by Scott Z. Burns. That’s it!"
Though many believe this to be a remake, they must know that it is not. It's a new adaptation of the novel by Luca Guadagnino.
