Cover-Up explores the career of journalist Seymour Hersh, who has been bestowed with the Pulitzer Prize. He had covered several cases in his career, including the Watergate scandal, as well as the US military's torture of prisoners during the Iraq War and Vietnam War.

In his official statement, Mark Obenhaus said:

This is a film I’ve been wanting to make for over two decades, and I’m so grateful that Sy finally relented. It is an honor to introduce younger generations, particularly young journalists, to Sy’s outsider muckraking reporting,” Poitras says. “Through him, the film speaks to the essential role of investigative journalism in holding the powerful accountable.

Its executive producers include Dede Gardner, Nick Shumaker, Brad Pitt, Josh Braun, Thomas MacWhirr, and Jeremy Kleiner. Poitras won an Academy Award for her documentary film Citizen Four, while Obenhaus is an Emmy winner for Steep.

In a Variety interview, Poitras spoke about the film:

“I felt strongly that I needed to know there was a strong archival base to pull from. My approach to filmmaking is scene-based. I had questions like: ‘What footage do we have from the 60s and 70s with Sy (Seymour) talking about his work that I can approach from a cinematic way?’”

Obenhaus added,

“From that, we developed an idea of how to approach interviewing him, which was kind of unusual because there were three of us, as Olivia also became a participant in the interview giving us material that could bolster the line of questioning. That whole process was quite original actually, and unexpectedly unique to this project.”

Poitras has also stated that the film isn't Seymour's biopic.

"We were anchored by Sy and his reporting, but always wanted to make it relevant to contemporary audiences.”

The film is shot by Mia Cioffi Henry, while Maya Shenfeld is the composer. It's edited by Poitras, Peter Bowman, and Amy Foote.

Cover-Up will start streaming on December 26, 2025.
