Cristiano Ronaldo made a rare visit to the United States to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House. He was seen along with his fiancée Georgina Rodríguez.

On November 18, he reportedly attended a high-profile black-tie dinner at the White House which was hosted by Trump for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This marked his first trip to the U.S. in a decade, since a 2016 trip to Las Vegas to celebrate Portugal's Euro Championship win.

During his opening speech at the dinner, Trump revealed that his youngest son, Barron William Trump is a big fan of Ronaldo. He said:

“Barron got to meet him. And I think he respects his father a little bit more, now, just the fact that I introduced you.”

Besides Ronaldo, the dinner was attended by several other high-profile guests such as Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Paramount Global CEO David Ellison and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. It featured a mix of power players from geopolitics, tech, sports and business.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s limited US appearance due to past legal issues

Cristiano Ronaldo’s travel to the U.S. has been rare since 2016 largely due to ongoing civil allegations related to an alleged r*pe incident in Las Vegas.

In that incident, Kathryn Mayorga, a former school teacher, claimed that the soccer player sexually assaulted her in a Las Vegas hotel room. However, he denied the allegations and maintained that the encounter was consensual.

A report in the New York Times stated that Cristiano Ronaldo met Mayorga at a nightclub called Rain following which he invited her and her friend to his hotel suite, where he allegedly r*ped her.

She eventually filed her civil lawsuit against Ronaldo in 2018 which he firmly denied in a Twitter (now known as X) post. He wrote:

“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”

In 2010, Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to pay Mayorga $375,000 (£272,000 at the time) as compensation for her claimed emotional distress and injuries. In exchange, Mayorga signed a non-disclosure agreement promising never to discuss the incident publicly.

The details of the settlement between Cristiano Ronaldo and Mayorga were leaked through the Football Leaks hack and were published by the German magazine, Der Spiegel in 2017. Following the publication, Mayorga went public with her allegations in 2018. She hired a new lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, and filed a civil complaint against the footballer.

However, U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey dismissed the civil lawsuit for bad-faith conduct by Stovall who relied on improper documents. The judge ruled that her misconduct was severe enough to taint the entire case. The judge said:

“I find that the procurement and continued use of these documents was bad faith, and simply disqualifying Stovall will not cure the prejudice to Ronaldo because the misappropriated documents and their confidential contents have been woven into the very fabric of (plaintiff Kathryn) Mayorga's claims.”

The case was permanently closed in favor of Ronaldo due to Mayorga’s attorney's improper conduct. Dorsey dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice in June 2022.
