As Tom Holland begins shooting for his Spider-Man film, Daniel Kaluuya is all set to co-write a Spider-Punk film, based on the rebellious character he voiced in Sony's Spider-Verse movies.

According to Deadline, the film is in early talks at Sony Pictures Animation, with the Get Out star set to write the project in collaboration with screenwriter Ajon Singh. It will serve as an animated spin-off to the 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which shows Miles Morales caught up in the multiversal complications.

The plot details for Spider-Punk have not been revealed so far, but the project will be Sony's latest effort to reintroduce its iconic slate of animated characters. Kaluuya's character is set to receive an animated spin-off, whereas Nicholas Cage's noir genre-inspired Spider-Noir is set to receive a live-action spin-off series at MGM+, as per Deadline.

There's also a third Spider-Verse in the works at Sony Pictures, titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, currently scheduled for a June 2027 release. It has reportedly been delayed due to logistical issues related to the artists' strikes in Hollywood. It is reportedly being helmed by the directing duo of Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson.

Daniel Kaluuya is an anti-establishment, punk-fueled version of the web-slinger, introduced after the protagonist Miles Morales got into the nitty-gritty of the multiverse.

Dubbed Spider-Punk, Kaluuya's character appeared to be in contrast to Peter Parker's version of the hero. His anarchistic attitude didn't sit well with Miguel O'Hara, since it got in the way of his leadership in the multiverse. Still, it stood out as one of the boldest ones from the project.

The writers and animators were reportedly inspired by British Afro-punk music, among other aesthetic elements, to paint Spider-Punk's kinetic and charismatic personality. His character briefly appeared in the 2018 film as one of the Spider-People and reprised that role in 2023, where he was present on a much bigger scale and scope.

What else is Daniel Kaluuya working on?

Daniel Kaluuya was known as a talented British actor since the early 2010s, but Jordan Peele's Get Out brought him into the limelight, earning him his first Oscar nomination. He later starred in Peele's 2022 horror film, Nope.

Before that, in 2021, he won an Oscar for his compelling performance as revolutionary Fred Hampton in Shaka King's Judas and the Black Messiah.

Since then, he has slowly been building his portfolio beyond acting, and the Spider-Punk animated film is its latest example. In 2023, he co-wrote and co-directed The Kitchen for Netflix. The sci-fi action film earned a positive reception, with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Soon, the 36-year-old actor will star in the upcoming A24 film titled Misty Green, written and directed by stand-up comedian and actor Chris Rock. Kaluuya is also going to produce a live-action Barney film with Mattel, as per Deadline. It is expected to be written by The Bear breakout star Ayo Edebiri.

His Spider-Punk script collaborator, Ajon Singh, has reportedly written a forthcoming A24 film, titled Primetime, which stars Robert Pattinson in a crucial role. More details on these projects are expected soon.
