It took hours to reconnect the fractured America, which became the UCA from the USA in the superhit Hideo Kojima game Death Stranding, which was released in 2019, and recently got a sequel, which is really an improvement on the already fantastic game.
Now the hours-long story might soon be wrapped in a couple or three-hour package, as we recently got a new update on its film adaptation. The film, which was announced in 2022, is now in active development, if we go by the recent comment from its executive producer, Allan Ungar, who told Screen Rant:
"It's in active development. So, like all these things, it's always something can't really talk about. But I will say that it's moving in a very positive direction."
The film is a joint production between Kojima Productions and A24, so we can expect a blockbuster with this one. A24 has already made its name in the independent cinema scene, and if Hideo Kojima is attached to the project, we can expect some cinematic experience, as he has turned entire games into cinematic experiences.
Death Stranding might finally beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Up until now, there's only one video game film that has managed to cross that $1 billion mark at the global box office: The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which borrows the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and more . Just recently, a sequel to the film called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was announced and will be released on April 3, 2026.
It sure has the potential to break that $1 billion barrier, but given that the Death Stranding film will be with us, probably by 2027, it might become the highest-grossing movie of all time.
The reason is that the video game wasn't just a game. It became a phenomenon. And given that Hideo Kojima is attached to the film, his vision is important to give us the perfect film that should do justice to the original storyline that took over 20 hours to complete while playing.
An interesting fact about the game is that there are discussions about the video game predicting the COVID-19 pandemic. The video game was released in November 2019, just before the global outbreak of the virus.
The Death Stranding movie doesn't need to find actors

There's one thing that the creators of the film don't have to worry about much. The original game hired actors, including Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Norman Reedus, and more. There was even Guillermo Del Toro in it, who portrayed the Deadman in the game. Elle Fanning also joined the cast in its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
Considering all of this, they can simply recast them in the movie, which would make it more authentic, especially when the video game community is taken into account. In fact, Norman Reedus has expressed interest in reprising his role of Sam Porter Bridges. In an interview with IGN, he said:
"If it was an option, yeah, for sure,” Reedus revealed when asked if he would consider playing himself in a future film version of the game which was announced to be in the works from Michael Sarnoski and A24 last month. “I don’t know what’s happening with it. It’s so pre pre pre right now. But yeah, of course."
We can only know when the cast will be revealed.
