Die, My Love plot: What the Robert Pattinson movie is really about, explored

Die, My Love is the second directorial venture of Lynne Ramsay, who has also written it with Alice Birch and Enda Walsh. The psychological dark dramedy had its world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where the audience gave a standing ovation that went on for six minutes. It is scheduled to be released theatrically on November 7, 2025. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:

A woman living in a remote rural area is driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood.

What is Die, My Love all about?

Die, My Love is an adaptation of Argentinian author Ariana Harwicz's namesake novel that was published in 2012. The film focuses on a young couple, Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jackson (Robert Pattinson), who live in New York City. They then decided to move to a rural area of Montana, where Jackson grew up, in order to live a simpler life.

Soon they become parents as they are trying to adjust to this new world. However, Grace starts struggling with her mental health amid an increasing sense of isolation. The entire story focuses on how her mental state affects their marriage and things start falling apart. Critics pointed out that the story talks about a crisis that repeats everyday.

In an interview with Deadline, director Lynne Ramsay revealed that the film is not about post-partem depression. She said,

“It’s not about [post-partem depression]. It’s about a relationship breaking down, it’s about love breaking down, and sex breaking down after having a baby. And it’s also about a creative block.”

The film changes the setting from the source material where the couple moves to a rural setting in France. Certain tweaks and changes have also been made to suit the adaptation.

In an interview with THR, Lawrence revealed how her motherhood affected the role.

“It was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what [Grace] would do… Extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolating. No matter where you are, you feel like an alien, and so it deeply moved me. I’ve wanted to work with Lynne Ramsay since I saw Ratcatcher and I was like, ‘There’s no way.’ But we took a chance, and we sent it to her. And I really, I cannot believe that I’m here with you."

The film is shot by Seamus McGarvey, while Toni Froschhammer did the editing. It's music is composed by Ramsay, George Vjestica and Raife Burchell.

Die, My Love will hit theatres on November 7, 2025.
