Filmmaker Kukla, who is well known for her work in her debut film Fantasy, is all geared up for her next project. It explores women's bodily autonomy in a patriarchal world led by men.

The film explores the plot of how a TikToker, in a very light-hearted sense, poses an idea where women should put a stop to having sex with men, as well as bearing children. When several women across the globe follow this idea, the film explores the consequences that take place after that.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, this is what Kukla says while talking about her upcoming film:

“My next film is about a potential threat of a third World War,”

Let us find out more about what Kukla revealed about her next film.

“It’s going to be quite different from Fantasy", says Kukla about her forthcoming film

Slovenian and Macedonian filmmaker Kukla is best known for her debut film, Fantasy (2025), which was showcased at the prestigious 78th Locarno Film Festival. The film is a poignant exploration of four women's lives, focusing on friendship, solidarity, gender norms, expectations, and self-actualization.

It all starts when a trans woman named Fantasy is introduced to a group of three women. Upon her arrival, these women, who already struggle with the traditional norms of patriarchy, find themselves confronting their thoughts, beliefs, and self-consciousness.

The film is filled with moments of unpredictability and humor. It serves as a mirror for women to reflect on themselves in their own, unique gaze, instead of the one that is dictated by patriarchy.

However, the upcoming film will not take the route that Fantasy took, as Kukla mentions in the interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“It’s going to be quite different from Fantasy.”

About the plot of the upcoming film, she explains:

“Of course, 99 percent of the world leaders are male, and then a TikToker, as a joke, says that we should just stop giving birth to their children, and we should stop having sex. And then, women all around the world stop having sex with men, and the shit hits the fan.”

The title of the film is not known yet, and neither are no more details have been revealed.

Kukla, whose complete name is Katarina Bogdanović, directed a short film, Sisters, in 2020. That short film further grew into the feature film Fantasy. Before her filmmaking work, Kukla, who is an exponent in music, used to helm music videos.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director talked about how the film idea came to her when she was a music video director. In the process, visuals started gushing in, and she tapped on her personal memories concerning women's stories, as she says:

"The idea for Fantasy came about when I was directing a music video for a local alternative band. I see pictures all the time. When I write, I see pictures of actions, and then I hear people talk. So, pictures came about, memories of girls who were kind of stuck in their position in the family, in the world, in their femininity."

Going by the nature of Kukla's work in Sisters and Fantasy, we can expect the upcoming film to be yet another brave, honest, relevant, and thought-provoking story that challenges patriarchy and every other oppressive structure around it, in myriad ways. The plot of the forthcoming film strongly resonates with the historical as well as the present conditions faced by women.
