Disney is not going ahead with the live-action hybrid adaptation of The Aristocats, which was supposed to be directed by Oscar and six-time Grammy Award winner Ahmir Thompson, also known as Questlove.

Questlove's movie was supposed to be one of the live-action remakes in Disney's upcoming release slate following the success of their recent Lilo & Stitch remake. However, the studio has reportedly decided to scrap the project from development. The Roots drummer and joint frontman spoke about it during his recent appearance on Score: The Podcast.

Per Deadline, Questlove said,

“Once Disney had their third president, usually when a new administration comes in, no matter what — they’re going to reshuffle."

The artist also spoke about the change in administration, which might have affected the plans for The Aristocats' hybrid remake. He said,

“Then they had another administration shuffle. And then it was like, ‘OK, well, alright. [So,] by the third time, I was just like, ‘Maybe this isn’t meant for me.'”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Questlove was supposed to direct the live-action remake of The Aristocats and write music for the movie, with a screenplay by Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit) and Keith Bunin (Nimona).

Questlove was supposed to produce under his Two One Five Entertainment banner with Gluck's Olive Bridge. Per THR, Zarah Zohlman, Tarik Trotter, and Shawn Gee were supposed to executive-produce the feature film to offer a CGI-live-action hybrid of Wolfgang Reitherman's 1970 musical comedy film of the same name.

Unfortunately, according to Questlove's latest response, the studio isn't moving ahead with the live-action remake of The Aristocats. In the conversation on Score: The Podcast,

“I would have loved to have done that project, but there are like 20 others that I can get to. What I don’t do is: I don’t make announcements until it’s ready, but there are literally four other films. I’ll be working til 2029-2030. So, [it] just wasn’t meant to happen. Maybe it will happen in the future.”

Based on the response, the artist has a few more projects on his radar. He most recently directed the 2025 documentary, Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), which was released online on Hulu and Disney+.

Before that, he co-directed the 2021 documentary Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), which centered around the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. The film won the Best Documentary award at the 2022 Academy Awards and the BAFTAs.

At the time of writing this article, there's no official word as to why the project has been scrapped. It might have been because of the mixed response to the live-action reimaginings of their animated projects. The studio has been using the strategy since the early 2010s, leading to some commercially successful projects, along with some underwhelming ones.

The Lion King (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017) are some of the highest-grossing live-action remakes from the studio, while Snow White (2025) had an underwhelming run at the box office as well as with the critics' and audiences' reception. That might be a reason the studio is putting a pause on The Aristocats remake.
