In surgical news coming in from Variety, Michelle Yeoh will star in The Surgeon in her next film, directed by Roshan Sethi. The Malaysian actress was last seen in Wicked and won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2023's Everything Everywhere All at Once, where she was observed navigating the multiverse.
We don't have a release date for the film, but that's likely to be the first in a potential franchise. The director has previously collaborated with Basil Iwankyk, producer of the John Wick films, so we can expect some tidbits from it. We already have one Ballerina incoming soon in the much-acclaimed action franchise.
Michelle Yeoh already has a big history in action and martial arts films, so we can expect some high-octane, bloody thriller like John Wick here. Speaking of action films, the actress has appeared opposite Pierce Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), and more.
What is The Surgeon about?

There's no official plot except for what Variety presents, which goes like this:
"In the film, Yeoh will play a retired surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35 years of surgical experience, leading to what the synopsis describes as an “explosive and brutal confrontation” during which she outwits and cuts down her enemies “in a visual style that defies anything you have seen before.”"
For this collaboration with Michelle, the director was excited about her role, given the fact that she has a long history with action movies. While he said this about the actress, Iwanyk believes that it was the incredibly compelling script Sethi wrote that prompted the actress to join the crew as The Surgeon's lead.
Patrick Wachsberger, who is known for involvement in films like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015), Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), Bad Genius (2024), and more, is producing via his sales banner with Legendary and will introduce the film to buyers at Cannes.
He too had words of praise for The Surgeon's director and the lead. He called the latter "a cinematic force."
What The Surgeon director has worked on before?
Roshan Sethi has worked on a medical drama series, Code Black, before this, which was originally created by Michael Seitzman. It ran for three seasons and was based on some real-life events. Though it features a fictional Angels Memorial Hospital. It ended on July 18, 2018.
Then he went on to co-create a medical drama series dubbed The Resident, and again, it featured another fictional hospital called Chastain Park Memorial. It ran for six seasons consisting of 107 episodes but was cancelled after that.
He made his film debut with 7 Days in 2021, which stars Geraldine Viswanathan in the lead opposite Karan Soni. We saw the former making waves with her Marvel debut in Thunderbolts* and now The New Avengers.
Other than that, he is already a physician and has worked on TV series that circle around hospitals only. Going by this, The Surgeon almost looks like a dream project for a medical man.
