Matthew Perry's untimely death in 2023 had shocked many at the time, and his doctor had been identified as one of the perpetrators who played a major role in Perry's death. Dr. Salvador Plasencia has entered a guilty plea to four counts of distributing ketamine, according to reports.
According to reports, Dr. Plasencia was in cahoots with other people as well and distributed approximately 20 vials of ketamine to Perry and his assistant. This reportedly played a big role in Perry's death. The investigations that followed even showed him mocking Matthew Perry's addiction struggles in exchanges with another doctor.
Dr. Salvador Plasencia has now accepted the charges that were levelled against him, and the results that may follow are likely to be serious. He is subjected to a possible 40 years' imprisonment with a fine of not less than 2 million dollars. His sentencing is scheduled for December 3, 2025.
As part of his plea agreement, Plasencia has also agreed to surrender his medical license, effectively ending his medical career. The US Attorney’s office for the Central District of California had also released a statement last week informing the public of the same.
Plasencia's representatives have also released a statement to the public, in which they were quoted as saying:
"He is profoundly remorseful for the treatment decisions he made while providing ketamine to Matthew Perry. He is fully accepting responsibility by pleading guilty to drug distribution and acknowledges his failure to protect Mr. Perry, a patient who was especially vulnerable due to addiction."
Circumstances surrounding Matthew Perry's death
The shocking death of Matthew Perry brought fans of the actor all across the globe in October 2023. It was recorded that the cause of death was the acute effects of ketamine, but also drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine (a drug used in opioid use disorder) were reported.
The investigations that have followed in the aftermath of Perry's death paint a picture of a network of individuals who exploited Perry’s vulnerability and addiction struggles for profit. The authorities have also been swift in their response, and U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Martin Estrada brought to light the wrongdoings done by the accused.
"These defendants took advantage of Mr. Perry's addiction issues to enrich themselves. They knew what they were doing was wrong. They knew what they were doing was risking great danger to Mr. Perry, but they did it anyways. In the end, these defendants were more interested in profiting off Mr. Perry than caring for his well-being."
People around the world have been demanding that the perpetrator be brought to justice, and one of the main culprits is about to face the repercussions soon.
