The Grabber came back in Black Phone 2 as a revengeful spirit but failed to do it. The teens were able to outsmart his hollow malificent soul and sent him to the depth of the frozen lake at the Alpine Lake Youth Camp.
After this, it is unlikely that this story will continue as this ending does not set up any stage for further events. In case you are wondering, it doesn't even have any mid- or end-credits scenes. It goes dark, just like it might be for the Grabber at the bottom of the lake.
Scott Derrickson, who is known for directing horror films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), Sinister (2012), and more, has directed the movie. He also directed Marvel's Doctor Strange in 2016.
Actors, including Mason Thames, Ethan Hawke, and Madeleine McGraw, return in the story, where the Grabber's (Hawke) focus changes from Finney (Thames) to his sister Gwen (McGraw). Other actors starring in it include Anna Lore, Graham Abbey, Maev Beaty, and more.
What happens in Black Phone 2?
Finney's life continues after the events of The Black Phone, which happened four years ago. He was abducted by the antagonist of the film, the Grabber. That was the first time he encountered the mysterious black phone.
Thankfully, he managed to escape the basement and break the Grabber's neck. The fate of the Grabber was left unknown but he returns in the form of a malicious spirit.
Here, the reason he is after Finney's sister is that Finney, in the first movie, tricked him into killing his own brother. So now this spirit wants to kill Finney's sister as part of his revenge.
Though he is invisible, and only Gwen can see him in her dreams, he can still harm other individuals physically. To kill this spirit, the film's protagonists find out that they need to lay the Grabber's three victims to rest. It is their lingering souls that are fueling his power.
They successfully extract those bodies and then lay them to rest in Black Phone 2, which then allows them to defeat the Grabber's spirit. Now, again, his fate remains unknown. But it is likely that he is gone for good.
What does that mean for the future?
Black Phone 2 has likely closed the chapter of the Grabber for good, and he, or his soul, is unlikely to return in the future. Meaning, there isn't likely to be a sequel at all. At least until it is addressed officially.
However, there's still a potential for the story to dive deeper into the Grabber's past, which means a prequel can follow after Black Phone 2. Recently, this happened with another franchise, It.
It (2017) is currently the highest-grossing horror film of all time and it was followed by a sequel called It Chapter Two. Now the prequel series dubbed It: Welcome to Derry is scheduled to come out on October 26, 2025, where Bill Skarsgård will reprise his role of Pennywise the Clown.
Black Phone 2 is currently running in theaters and earned $2.6 million in Thursday previews. That's a lot lower than its production budget, which is estimated to be around $30 million.
