American retired TV journalist and sportscaster, Bryant Gumbel, was rushed to the hospital from his Manhattan apartment around 9 pm on Monday, October 20, 2025, following a medical emergency.

The 77-year-old former host of the NBC show TODAY was doing “okay,” according to a family member’s brief statement to TMZ. However, additional details are awaited at this time as he remains in the hospital.

The news of Bryant Gumbel’s medical emergency and hospitalization comes less than a year after Greg Gumbel died from pancreatic cancer at his home in Florida in December 2024, aged 78.

Exploring further about Bryant Gumbel’s three siblings

Bryant Gumbel was the second among four siblings. He was born in September 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Judge Richard Dunbar Gambel and his wife, Rhea Alice LeCesne. However, the couple’s firstborn was Greg Gumbel, who was born in May 1946.

Rhonda Gumbel-Thomas followed soon after. Years later, in August 1964, their youngest sibling and sister, Renee Gumbel-Farrahi, was born in Chicago, Illinois, according to laaster.com.

Greg Gumbel was a longtime CBS Sports anchor who primarily broadcast during the NFL and NCAA basketball seasons. Greg’s career spanned five decades. Between 1998 and 2023, Bryant Gumbel’s older brother covered the CBS Men’s college basketball tournament and was the studio anchor for the March Madness telecast for the NCAA. Fondly called ‘Gumby’ by his colleagues, Greg was a three-time Annual Sports Emmy Award winner and often appeared on his friend Howard Stern’s radio show. He also worked at ESPN and NBC.

“He passed away peacefully, surrounded by much love, after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity,” the statement read.
It continued, “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten. Greg's memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him.”

According to LinkedIn, Rhonda Gumbel-Thomas is a retired speech-language pathologist and senior recruiter for Spotter Staffing with over 33 years of experience. She also offered clinic coordination, staff supervision, and oversaw outreach programs.

Additionally, Greg and Bryant Gumbel’s sister helped connect special educators with schools in Chicago and its suburbs. Rhonda graduated with a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing science from Mundelein College, Chicago, before pursuing an M.S. degree in communication disorders from Bradley University. She is married and has two children.

According to laaster.com, Renee Gumbel-Farrahi was the youngest Gumbel sibling. She maintained a life away from the spotlight and reportedly died in July 2019, aged 54.

The details surrounding Bryant Gumbel’s latest health scare remain undisclosed as of writing. However, in October 2009, he underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor near one of his lungs.

Two months later, he appeared as a guest host on Live! with Regis and Kelly, in the absence of Regis Philbin. At the time, the HBO Real Sports broadcaster spoke about his cancer battle with Kelly Ripa. He explained there was nothing to “hide” or “run from,” adding he just wanted to keep it “private” until he was done with the surgery. He also shared being in remission.
