The Stand is the latest Stephen King adaptation announced or released this year. This time, director Doug Liman is taking a shot at bringing its epic world to the big screen.
Liman is joining hands with Paramount for this feature film, which he will also produce with Cross Creek Pictures' Tyler Thompson. It is the latest adaptation of King's classic novel, which has already been used for two miniseries. Unlike them, Liman's project will be a film. It will be particularly challenging to execute as a two-hour-long film since the original book is over 1000 pages long.
The project is still in the early stages. The writers are yet to get on board to pen this ambitious project that covers a quintessential good-versus-evil narrative set in a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy backdrop.
The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Liman hopes to handle his The Stand adaptation differently than his predecessors with his take on the source material. He reportedly wants it to be a standalone film and not turn it into a multi-movie project. No other details have been revealed at this point.
Stephen King's The Stand has continued to inspire storytellers for decades
The Stand is one of Stephen King's most significant works, influencing many post-apocalyptic projects like ABC's Lost, among others. As mentioned, it has also been directly adapted into two miniseries. The first was in 1994 as a miniseries, which starred Gary Sinise, Laura San Giacomo, Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan, and more. It earned two Emmys and received a favorable reception.
Then, in 2020, Josh Boone and Benjamin Cavell worked on another miniseries starring James Marsden, Katherine McNamara, Alexander Skarsgård, Odessa Young, and more. It was available to watch on Paramount+ and Starz. Five years later, Paramount is interested in revisiting King's novel with Doug Liman's input.
The plot revolves around a dystopian America where a virus has cleared most of the population. So, the remaining few become the focus of its narrative that continues for several years. Being one of King's most popular works, his fans must be familiar with the source material. It will be interesting to see how Liman approaches its subjects and presents its iconic characters like Mother Abigail, Randall Flagg, and Trashcan Man, among others.
Liman is more than familiar with compelling dystopian world-building since he worked on 2014's Edge of Tomorrow, which starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. In addition to that, he has helmed action-oriented entertaining projects like The Bourne Identity (2002), American Made (2017), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), and the Jack Gyllenhaal-led Road House remake in 2024. So, he might crack the code and offer a fresh spin on The Stand despite the ambitious nature of his project.
There are Stephen King adaptations to come in 2025

Apart from The Stand, a few other Stephen King adaptations are coming out in 2025. Mike Flanagan's The Monkey and Oz Perkins' The Monkey are already in theaters, and two more films are on the way: Francis Lawrence's The Long Walk and Edgar Wright's The Running Man.
