Download Festival faced controversy in 2025

The 2025 edition of Download Festival faced controversy after festival organizers announced that they would comply with the EHRC guidelines regarding trans people's access to bathroom facilities.

"We will be following the interim guidance issued by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on 25 April 2025 here. Their guidance states that ā€˜trans women (biological men) should not be permitted to use the women’s facilities and trans men (biological women) should not be permitted to use the men’s facilities."

The festival's decision to comply with such regulations caused outrage on social media, with singer NOAHFINNCE, as well as bands such as Witch Fever and Pinkshift, calling out the organizers.

This led to a clarification from festival organizers to clear up what they termed a miscommunication. The organizers stated that only some bathrooms would be same-s*x toilets. They said that the majority of bathrooms would be gender neutral:

"At the heart of Download is acceptance – we stand with all members of our community and want everyone to feel safe, supported and welcome at the festival. We want to reassure all of our customers that at Download, the majority of toilets will be gender neutral and available to all."

The statement continued:

There will also be single s*x toilets provided. Download Festival has always been and remains for everyone. We sincerely apologise that a previous communication on this was not clear.

Download Festival is partnering with BBC Radio 1, Planet Rock, Kerrang! Radio, Kerrang, and Rock Sound for its upcoming edition.
