There's like a year and a half until we see Paul 'Muad'Dib' Atreides returning in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part 3. As of this moment, we have a few returning characters to the story, including Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho, Florence Pugh's Princess Irulan, and Zendaya's Chani. In case the readers are wondering about Momoa's return, they need to read Dune Messiah right away to know the secret.
While we have these characters returning to the game, we may not see House Atreides' weapons master, Gurney Halleck, in the final film in Villeneuve's trilogy. Josh Brolin was in a conversation with Josh Horowitz recently, where he sort of confirmed that he will not be in the film. He said,
"I reached out to Denis, I was like why do all these people think like ‘hey are you here yet?’… Like dude read the script!"
Brolin played Gurney Halleck in the first two films, where the second one ended with him by Paul's side, as the Great Houses resist Paul's ascendancy. Looks like that was it, and Paul will be there in Dune: Part 3 with one less person in his crew.
Another major character might not make it to Dune: Part 3

If you don't want spoilers of the story, we recommend stopping reading right away.
There's a very low likelihood that Gurney Halleck will make it to Dune: Part 3 because he is on Caladan throughout this story. Not just him; he is accompanied by Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson in the first two films. Given this, we may not see her in the upcoming film either.
In Dune Messiah, we don't find much mention of these characters, but they do return in the follow-up, Children of Dune. However, given that this will be the conclusion to Villeneuve's trilogy, Dune: Part Two might be the last film we see Lady Jessica and Gurney Halleck in the film adaptation.
Even the IMDb listing of the film's cast doesn't have Josh Brolin and Rebecca Ferguson among the available names. But there's Robert Pattinson, who is listed as a rumored character in the movie.
What happens in Dune Messiah?

The third film in the Dune trilogy is actually the second book, speaking of the novels. The first two films adapted only the first book in this giant franchise.
Dune Messiah takes place twelve years after the events of the first book, and Paul has ruled Arrakis for a long time now. By this time, his forces have reached several corners of the universe, and 61 billion people have perished during his rule. However, Paul thinks that there's something worse than this awaiting in the future.
While he is one strong ruler in this universe, Duncan Idaho's return causes the Fremen to withdraw their support for him. In addition to that, we will see him protecting Chani, who is said to die if she gives birth to an heir.
Princess Irulan, who is now married to him for political purposes, also plays a major role in the story, as she is secretly giving contraceptives to Chani in order to prevent the birth of an heir. Paul is already aware of this, but doesn't do anything because this serves his purpose in saving Chani from dying.
Dune: Part 3 releases on December 18, 2026.
