What is Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story all about?
Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story is about ex-therapist Jodi Hildebrandt and YouTuber Ruby Franke. While the former is from Utah, Franke ran a YouTube channel called 8 Passengers. The documentary examines the truth and the events that happened, which led to legal actions.
Hilderbrandt provided counselling through her company ConneXions. In the year 2015, Franke started making family vlogs for her channel, where she documented her life with her six kids. Both Franke and Hilderbrandt came together and formed a collective called Moms of Truth. The two started putting out content together.
Franke eventually started giving parenting tips to her viewers. However, her audience did not know that her six children were going through physical and emotional abuse in real life. In 2020, fans grew suspicious when one of the kids revealed that he was forced to sleep on a bean bag. In August 2023, one of Franke's kids escaped from the house of Hilderbrandt. The cops investigated and found out about the abuse going on in these two houses.
The two were convicted of child abuse, and Franke pleaded guilty to starving and abusing her children. In February 2024, both were sentenced to four years in prison. The exact time of their sentence will be determined by the parole board of Utah. Eric Clarke, the state prosecutor, said:
"The children were regularly denied food, water, beds to sleep in, and virtually all forms of entertainment."
After the sentence was said, Franke apologized to her children. She said,
"I was so disoriented that I believed dark was light and right was wrong. I was led to believe that this world was an evil place, filled with cops who control, hospitals that injure, government agencies that brainwash, church leaders who lie and lust, husbands who refuse to protect and children who need abuse."
Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story features archival footage, news coverage, and interviews of people associated with the case to tell a comprehensive tale. The film will start streaming from December 30, 2025, on Netflix.
