Christian Zubert’s Exterritorial is largely a mystery thriller but also leans into psychological thriller territory, especially for Jeanne Goursaud’s character, Sara. She visits the US Consulate General in Frankfurt to apply for a work visa. After serving in Afghanistan alongside her husband—who lost his life there—Sara is planning to start a new life in the US with her son Joshua (Rickson Guy da Silva).
She doesn’t know that the consulate is about to become her personal hell, beginning with her son going missing. Regional security head Eric Kynch (Dougray Scott) looks into the matter, but he’s not genuinely trying to help her. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that he’s planning to kill her. Sara poses a threat to him because they served together in Afghanistan—something she doesn’t initially remember. Eric, however, assumes she does.
Eventually, Sara uncovers the truth and forces Eric to confess his crimes and his motives behind the events he orchestrated during her visit to the consulate. While Eric believes he’s in control, Sara has recorded everything and plays the confession through a speaker, allowing everyone to hear what their regional security head has done.
Why Sara was being framed as a mentally unstable person in Exterritorial?

The events in Exterritorial become truly terrifying when seen from Sara’s perspective. Imagine arriving at a government building with your child—only to have that child disappear. Then, the very people who should help you begin insisting the child never existed. They even show you surveillance footage of yourself entering the building alone. It’s so convincing that anyone would start to question their own reality.
All of this happens to Sara. But her maternal instincts and military training help her stay grounded and fight to find her very real son. One officer suggests she leave and return home, but doing so would mean never seeing her son again. If she left, she would not be allowed back into the building. And if they returned her son, it would confirm that they had been deceiving her all along.
How did Sara lure Eric to confess his crimes?

Another woman, Kira, appears in Exterritorial and claims she is being held captive in the consulate because she possesses a drive containing crucial evidence. She and Sara team up. During their search for the truth, Sara learns that Eric had served alongside her in Afghanistan. A journalist had previously tried to contact her, suspecting Eric of serious misconduct.
With everything falling into place, Sara takes a desperate step—she kidnaps Eric’s daughter and demands a conversation in exchange for the girl’s safety. Eric agrees. He takes Sara into a room where he disables the speakers to keep their discussion off the record.
During the confrontation, Eric shoots Sara and injures his own leg to make it look like she attacked him. But it’s too late. Sara had already placed a recording device near a speaker, broadcasting his confession to everyone. The truth is finally out.
