Final Destination Bloodlines is closer to breaking a major franchise record with its box office collection. The film marks the sixth chapter of this film series that began in 2000. It arrived over a decade after the previous entry hit the theaters. Since its release on May 16, it has been reigning at the top of the box office charts. On its first weekend, it earned $102 million worldwide and about $51 million domestically, dethroning Marvel's Thunderbolts* from the top spot.

Considering these exceptional box office figures, we predicted it would cross a franchise weekend within a matter of weeks in our previous report. By the 18th, Final Destination: Bloodlines had already surpassed the global collection of the second Final Destination film. It also has a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, and some sources have claimed that this positive consensus has driven a lot of audiences to the theaters.

Regardless, due to their overwhelmingly positive response, Bloodlines is just $62 million away from being the highest-earning Final Destination film of all time.

Since its inception in 2000, Final Destination hasn't particularly been a critical darling. Apart from Final Destination 5 (2011), every franchise entry has received a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the less-than-favorable critical reception hasn't stopped it from reaching the box office highs. The first film earned over $112 million globally against its $23 million reported budget. Since then, it has been a long-running, popular film series with a significant pop cultural cachet.

Final Destination Bloodlines is crossing their lifetime collection seemingly within a week. As mentioned before, it outgrossed the second franchise entry just on the first weekend. Since then, it has steadily climbed the box office ladder and has now crossed even the first and the third films at the global box office. Per TheNumbers, its box office collection stands at over $124 million, which puts it only behind Final Destination 5 (2011) and The Final Destination (2008).

The fourth entry earned about $186 million, while the fifth one earned $157 million worldwide. So, to reach the second spot in the franchise's top-grossing list, Bloodlines needs to earn $34 more. For the first spot, it needs to earn at least $63 million. However, unlike its opening weekend, it will face two major contenders on the Memorial Day long weekend. They are Mission Impossible—The Final Reckoning and the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake.

What makes Final Destination so special? Here's what the directors said about the late Tony Todd's performance

Final Destination Bloodlines is another chapter in this frenzied slasher supernatural horror franchise. However, it was also an emotional affair because of the passing of its recurring star and horror legend Tony Todd. So, when asked about Todd's monologue, co-director Zach Lipovsky told The Hollywood Reporter,

"It was an incredibly unique and special situation where not only narratively did his character make sense to be commenting on mortality and his own mortality, but to give an actor an opportunity to speak to the audience about mortality and kind of what it’s all about — and say goodbye. It was a great responsibility for all of us that were there. And he was a huge partner in that."
