Final Destination Bloodlines is winning over audiences as we speak, and it hardly feels surprising considering the love and appreciation it has received over the years. The first Final Destination film was released in 2000 and earned over $112 million globally at the box office despite its less-than-favorable reviews. Since then, it has been a sought-after slasher supernatural horror franchise, irrespective of its critical reception.
Final Destination Bloodlines, which has received mostly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, has seemingly helped it at the box office, if not the fans' fondness for this franchise. So, when death came knocking on the door this time, they hit the theaters in overwhelming numbers. It has led this sixth entry in the franchise to earn $112 million worldwide just in its opening weekend.
That puts it immediately ahead of the total worldwide box office collection of Final Destination 2, which earned $90 (per Box Office Mojo) globally in the entirety of its run. So, Final Destination Bloodlines seems to have struck a chord with the audience.
The film comes 14 years after the previous franchise installment. So, it might have helped its box office collection. No matter what the reason, its current collection puts it ahead of the other franchise entries, and keeps it well on its way to breaking a franchise record in a matter of weeks (or even a single week).
Final Destination Bloodlines might surpass the worldwide collection of every franchise entry in a week
There is no reason to downplay Final Destination Bloodlines' box office success, which has brought audiences to the theaters in big numbers. As mentioned before, it has already crossed the worldwide collection of the second franchise installment and is on its way to cross the rest soon. Until now, the first film earned $112 million, the third one earned $118 million, the fourth one earned $186 million, and the fifth one earned $157 million worldwide.
Considering the current trajectory of Bloodlines, it can easily cross the first and third franchise installments in the first week itself. That leaves us with the fifth one, which currently holds the second place, and the fourth one, which holds the first place in the highest-grossing Final Destination films. So, Bloodlines needs to earn roughly $84 million globally to dethrone the fourth film from the top of this list.
What might delay Final Destination Bloodlines from breaking this franchise record?
While looking at the audience response for Bloodlines, Franchise Entertainment Research analyst David A. Gross told Variety:
"This is a sensational opening for the sixth episode of a horror series. Critic’s reviews are sensational, and the audience score is excellent for horror."
Based on his response, it seems like this sixth Final Destination film might cross the $186 million mark globally in a matter of weeks, maybe by the Memorial Day Weekend itself. On its opening weekend, Bloodlines has already replaced MCU's Thunderbolts* from the top spot, with Ryan Coogler's Sinners placed at the third spot, per Variety.
From May 23 onwards, Bloodlines will also compete with Mission: Impossible - Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch. The former's audiences might overlap with the slasher flick, making it a potential threat to its box office reign. However, it can still pull a major chunk of the audience if we are to believe the second-week performance of the previous Final Destination entries.
