Nuremberg is an upcoming historical drama film that centers around the discussions between a psychiatrist and a convicted war criminal. Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, the film stars Rami Malek as Douglas Kelley, who finds himself in a "battle of wits" with Hermann Göring, played by Russell Crowe. Its official plot synopsis reads,
"The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson, have the task of ensuring the Nazi regime answers for the unveiled horrors of the Holocaust, while a US Army psychiatrist is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Herman Göring."
Sony Pictures Classics has shared the first teaser for this project. It offers a window into the high stakes of these real-life scenarios that led to the fall of an empire. To follow its harrowing details, Vanderbilt adapted American journalist Jack El-Hai's non-fiction book, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.
Nuremberg: The teaser for the Russell Crowe film revealed
The Nuremberg teaser opens with a shot from inside a prison. Through a voiceover, we learn that it's a secret military prison where the Nazis held Jewish people in captivity. Within moments, the clip introduces us to Hermann Göring, who was Adolf Hitler's right-hand man and a part of the Nazi high command.
"I'll have my day in court," he says.
Göring seems determined to make a case for himself in the courtroom. However, as he fights an ideological battle, psychiatrist Douglas Kelley fights another one for the sake of humanity.
"I know more about this man than anyone else on the planet," he says.
Kelley seems determined to win an intellectual fight against Göring as he makes a sincere plea for the troubled prisoners. However, that's not the only thing we get to see or hear in this one-minute clip. We also see Sgt. Howie Triest exposing the complacency of the locals that enabled inhumane crimes to go unpunished for a long time.
"You know why it happened here? Because people let it happen," he says.
Everyone is fighting for what they believe in. However, much like Kelley, lawyer Robert H. Jackson is on the side of humanity, determined to make Göring confess to his crimes as he is put on trial.
"I'm gonna make Herman Göring on the stand, and I'm gonna make him tell the world what he did," he says.
The new film from James Vanderbilt is the latest effort to bring these events to the screen. In the past, director Stanley Kramer and writer Abby Mann brought a fictionalized version of the 1947 Nuremberg trials and tribunals conducted after World War II.
