The trailer offers a glimpse into the life of Maggie Price (Ayo Edebiri), a young student and the protégée studying under the guidance of Alma Olsson (Julia Roberts). Olsson's friend, Henrick "Hank" Gibson (Andrew Garfield), is at odds with Price, who accuses him of an assault. She seeks help from Olsson, knowing something about her history with Gibson.

"It's the right thing to do, right? To tell someone, you know, given your history," Price says to Olsson.

Olsson acts puzzled as she finds herself at a crossroads as a well-liked professor and a married woman. The trailer hints at an affair between Olsson and Gibson, which creates further complications in Olsson's life.

While Price seeks help in a delicate situation as a young, black woman, Olsson seemingly makes her uncomfortable with her queries. So, Olsson says, what happens to be the film's tagline,

"Not everything is supposed to make you comfortable."

Ayo Edebiri stars as an Ivy League student to expose her professor and her colleague in After the Hunt

The official trailer sets the stage for the forthcoming psychological thriller, co-produced by Imagine Entertainment. Its official plot synopsis, per IMDb, reads:

"A college professor finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light."

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in August 2025, with a limited rollout planned for the 10th before the wider release the following week, on the 17th (per Variety). Amazon MGM will reportedly handle the distribution in the United States, and Sony Pictures Releasing will release the film internationally.

The iconic musical duo behind Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, have composed the score. The screenplay was written by Nora Garrett, while Malik Hassan Sayeed handled the cinematography.

Luca Guadagnino cast Ayo Edebiri after seeing her performance in Emma Seligman's Bottoms.

The Italian filmmaker behind hits like Challengers and Call Me by Your Name didn't learn about Ayo Edebiri from her breakout role as chef Sydney Adamu from FX's The Bear. Instead, he cast her after seeing her performance in Bottoms, a 2023 satirical dark comedy that follows a group of high-school girls, where Edebiri played a lesbian girl.

During a cover piece for W magazine, the After the Hunt director shared what appealed to him about Edebiri's performance.

“Ayo is a movie star in the real sense of bigness, and cinema, and excitement. She has a commitment toward performance that you rarely find now. She absolutely commands your gaze. She’s funny and she’s extremely beautiful—and that is a very rare combination," the director said.

He further added,

“Ayo is also a director, and she thinks like one.”

A few months after he made these comments, Edebiri received an Emmy nomination for directing an episode of The Bear. Her latest project with Guadagnino also stars a few more stars apart from Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. Here's the cast of After the Hunt we know so far:

  • Chloë Sevigny
  • Michael Stuhlbarg
  • Lío Mehiel
  • Ariyan Kassam
  • Thaddea Graham
  • Burgess Byrd
  • Christine Dye
  • Will Price

After the Hunt is scheduled to release theatrically on October 17, 2025.
