Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be out in theaters by the end of 2025. So, its star, Matthew Lillard, recently addressed the changes they are making to the sequel. For those we don't know, this supernatural survival horror movie franchise is based on a video game by the same name. The first movie came out in 2023 but received mainly negative reviews from critics. Some publications also pointed out that it is made for gamers and not for movie critics. However, even the fans of this game were reportedly divided about the movie adaptation.

The movie left many casual moviegoers and critics confused about what it was trying to say. As a result, it still holds a 32% Tomatometer rating against an 86% Popcornmeter. However, if you scour through the reaction threads of the game's fans speaking about the movie, you will also find some passionate complaints.

Some believe that it could have worked better without a PG-13 rating. However, despite these issues, that rating helped it become Blumhouse's highest-grossing movie worldwide. On the other hand, some fans were reportedly expecting more YouTuber cameos in the movie, while others were hoping for more jump scares. Nonetheless, based on the comments from Matthew Lillard, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 might just put the fans' worries to rest.

Matthew Lillard says Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will address the fans' concerns related to the first movie

In a recent interview with ComingSoon.Net, Matthew Lillard addressed fan concerns by speaking about the creative process for Five Nights At Freddy's 2 with the game's creator, Scott Cawthon, who is also writing the movie with Emma Tammi returning to direct.

"I think the storytelling’s been amped up a lot. I don’t feel like the budget’s gone through the roof. There are $250 million, $300 million movies out there, $500 million movies. I mean, God knows what Avengers cost, but we are certainly not that. We’re still sort of an independent little horror movie. But I do think that the movie learned the first time around, I think Scott, as a primary storyteller, listened to the audience."

Lillard further added,

"[It’s] what he does best. He knows that community so well. And I think that he’s responded with a script that… maybe it has more jump scares. Maybe it’s a little more action-packed. I don’t know. I’m not here to say “Yes it is”, or “No it’s not.” But I do think the fans are gonna love this next movie, and I think that they’re gonna be really excited come December."

The upcoming Five Nights At Freddy's 2 is based on the game's sequel, which came out in 2014. Its plot synopsis, per IMDb, reads:

"1987, after a rather unstable life, Jeremy Fitzgerald found work as a security guard at the new Freddy's Fazbear Pizzeria, but when he entered there he would realize that not everything there is as it seems."

In addition to Matthew Lillard, the cast of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will also include:

  • Josh Hutcherson
  • Elizabeth Lail
  • Piper Rubio
  • Mckenna Grace
  • Wayne Knight

Universal Pictures will handle its distribution, and it is scheduled to be released on December 5, 2025.
