Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein has already proved to be one of the best movies of the year. With brilliant performances given by Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and more, fans and critics alike are praising this Gothic science fiction film.

It is especially The Creature, or Frankenstein's monster as we have known him for years, whose performance is worth watching. However, it is not just the talent of the actor; it is his patience that made this role and the transformation it required truly possible. Mike Hill, the head of the prosthetic makeup effects department, told ELLE magazine recently,

"Without Jacob Elordi’s patience, this would not have been possible."

Regarding performance, he said that,

"I know that there’s a lot of press saying how good [Elordi] was physically for the part, [standing at] 6’5”. Yes, he was a fabulous canvas for me to play with and to work this creature on. But there’s also a soul in there, and there’s an active performance in there."

As of this writing, the film is currently sitting with a critical score of 86% on the review aggregator platform Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 95%.

Jacob Elordi's character is different from the previous versions of The Creature we've seen

When we talk about Frankenstein's monster, it is usually a zombie-like rectangular head (much like Eighter from Dragon Ball, who was also inspired by the same character) and a couple of bolts sticking out of the neck like corkscrews.

Instead, the team tried to create a character as close as Mary Shelley's version in the novel. Regarding this, the costume designer Kate Hawley told ELLE that,

It was much more leaning into the world and language of the novel, and the tone and atmosphere that was created—all the themes: mythology, religion.

Mike Hall also recalls Guillermo Del Toro's words before making the movie. The director asked him to make the creature. That was the condition, or else he wasn't interested in making the film. Mike says it was an easy yes. Other than this movie, both have collaborated on films like The Shape of Water (2017), Nightmare Alley (2021), and more.

Jacob Elordi wasn't the first choice for the role of The Creature

Following Pinocchio's success, for which the director received an Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature Film, he began looking for actors for his next adventure, which would turn out to be Frankenstein.

However, it wasn't Jacob Elordi on the director's mind for his version of The Creature in his film. It was Andrew Garfield who he thought would be fit for the role.

However, The Amazing Spider-Man dropped out, and del Toro told Vanity Fair magazine that there was a lot of pressure on him, as he had only nine weeks to transform the 6'5" Jacob Elordi into his vision.

The height of the actor certainly added more weight to the role he presented on screen, and now it is being said it's his best performance to date.
