Freakier Friday features a post-credits scene, but with a twist

Freakier Friday tells the story of a mother-daughter duo nearly 22 years after the first film, Freaky Friday (2003), came out.

This fantasy comedy film is helmed by Nisha Ganatra with a screenplay from Jordan Weiss. The latter also co-wrote the story with Elyse Hollander. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd,

"Years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover lightning might indeed strike twice."

Freakier Friday post-credits scene has a twist

Freakier Friday has a post-credits scene, which features a behind-the-scenes peek into the film through bloopers. It showcases the tryst between Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis and other cast members.

It's fairly common these days for post-credits scenes to feature a scene that teases the possibility of a sequel. However, earlier films had BTS scenes as post-credit scenes. Freakier Friday taps into the nostalgia of early 2000 films by showcasing a behind-the-scenes feature. This is also a callback to the original film, which had a similar kind of end-credit scene.

Towards the end of the sequel, the entire family is shown going towards the bookstore where Rebelling With Respect, a new book written by Tess, is being promoted. But she realizes that her back cover photo in it features her with puffed lips. This had happened when Lily was inside her body and had used lip plumpers to enhance her lips. This is where the film ends and the post-credit scenes begin, featuring bloopers from the making.

Freakier Friday is produced by Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristin Burr, and Andrew Gunn. The storyline takes place 22 years after the first film, which itself was adapted from the 1972 namesake novel by Mary Rodgers. It focuses on the mother-daughter duo as Anna herself has become a mother.

In an IndieWire interview, Nisha Ganatra revealed that Jamie Lee Curtis wanted the sequel to happen. She said,

“Jamie willed this into existence, and from all the fans who willed it into existence by asking her but I was surprised too. I knew millennials love-love-loved it, I knew Gen X loved, but I didn’t think Gen Z knew the movie as well as they do. Gen Z is the generation that is being most misrepresented and sort of treated poorly in pop culture right now, so it was really important to me to get it right for Gen Z."

Freakier Friday is playing in the theaters.
