Freaky Tales consists of four stories that take place in 1987 Oakland, California. All the interconnected stories take place around real-life historical events. The stories are called Strength in Numbers: The Gilman Strikes Back, Don't Fight the Feeling, Born to Mack, and The Legend of Sleepy Floyd.
In an IndieWire interview, Ryan Fleck revealed the things he wanted to incorporate from the 1980s. He said,
"I didn’t know what it was going to be about, but I knew it was going to have that Sleepy Floyd game be a part of it, because I heard that game on the radio as a 10-year-old kid, and it was just such a wild game to hear on the radio. We used [sportscaster] Greg Papa’s [original] play-by-play, which he re-recorded for the movie. He calls Sleepy Floyd “Superman,” that’s a real thing during the game, so he just created this image of a basketball player superhero in my head."
Fleck further spoke about intertwining real events in the film.
"So I’ve been pitching versions of a movie called “Freaky Tales” to Anna ever since I’ve known her, this is like 20 years. It started with, “Oh, is it a Too $hort biopic?” “Is it like an ‘Almost Famous’ journalist who becomes friends with him and they go on a day, they spend the day together?”
The film's streaming debut will give an opportunity to people who missed it in the theaters to finally watch it in the comfort of their homes. Freaky Friday will start streaming on HBO Max on August 8, 2025.
