From Good Friday to Easter, ‘Sinners’ dominates the box office and here’s why it’s a hit

Michael B. Jordan's double duty as Smoke and Stack in Sinners is luring a lot of viewers, like Sammie's music lured those vampires that the twins dealt with in the latest horror experience given to us by Ryan Coogler. By Easter Sunday, the film had already made $45.6 million at the domestic box office, per Variety's report. It's $61 million if we look at the international box office.

The day-to-day earnings kept getting lower for the film at the domestic box office, where it first raked in $19.2 million, then $16.5 million on day two, and $19.9 million on day three.

While it topped the chart, it's still A Minecraft Movie that keeps making its way to these charts, though Sinners beat it this time, as it continues to pull audience from one of the largest gaming communities and usual moviegoers too. It's $344.6 million strong domestically and $720 million internationally.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie seems to be in trouble as the Jack Black and Jason Momoa film comes to dethrone it as the highest-grossing video game film.

It's a long way for Sinners, but that doesn't seem to be an issue

Ryan Coogler's film is far from entering the top 50 highest-grossing horror films of all time. But it is likely to see it making its place there. Going by this list, it's 2007's Paranormal Activity that's currently sitting in the 50th spot with $194 million.

Sinners is a new story in its entirety, so fans sure would want to take a look at it, and by the looks of it, it will keep growing, commercially speaking. We say this with context to Paranormal Activity, as it began what should be labeled as one stagnant run with just $77k on its opening weekend.

There are more films that opened weaker in contrast to Sinners but went on to become a part of this club, like a slow explosion at the box office. A few among them would be The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), Dark Shadows (2012), Constantine (2005), and more.

Besides, its bang-on score at Rotten Tomatoes is a sure sign that it'll keep pulling new audiences into the theaters. Though it's 98% as of this writing, it began with a perfect score. Sad it failed to remain in the club that currently hosts films like On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (2024), The Terminator (1984), Toy Story (1995), and more. Although these movies don't have as many reviews as Sinners does.

What happened other than the Ryan Coogler film this weekend?

We have already mentioned A Minecraft Movie, which was a runner-up this weekend. But while Sinners was at large, Jesus loomed large at the domestic box office with The King of Kings, earning $17.2 million from Good Friday to Easter.

Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne's The Amateur saw a drop in its earnings by half, making $7.2 million; it opened with $14.8 million. Warfare, which was another critical blockbuster, currently boasting a 94% score at RT, was sort of the same, as it took home $4.8 million against its $8.3 million from the last weekend.

Snow White, which was surrounded more by controversies than fans, made $1.1 million and isn't likely to be a contender among the top 10 earners next weekend.
