As per reports at Variety, Gal Gadot and Matthias Schoenaerts have been cast in the lead roles of Niki Caro’s forthcoming film Ruin.

According to a 2018 report by the outlet, Margot Robbie was initially reported to star in Ruin, with Justin Kurzel attached as director. Matthias Schoenaerts was also associated with the project at that time.

Situated in the post-WWII Germany, Gal Gadot shall be essaying the role of a freed inmate who has just been released from a concentration camp. Matthias Schoenaerts is set to portray a German man serving in the army. Their paths intersect as they share a common motive — to avenge the Nazi paramilitary organization, the SS.

The synopsis of the film, as mentioned in Variety, is as follows:

“Ruin” is set post-WWII Germany and follows a recently released camp prisoner (Gadot) who is forced to make an unlikely alliance with a German soldier (Schoenaerts) in a mutual quest to exact revenge on a Nazi SS squad.

This is not the first time director Niki Caro has explored a story set during WWII. Her 2017 film The Zookeeper’s Wiferevolves around the true story of Polish Jews who were freed from captivity at the Warsaw Zoo in Poland with the help of a couple named Jan and Antonina Żabiński.

The script of Ruin has been jointly written by Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo. In 2017, the script even made it to the top of The Black List survey. The writer duo had previously co-written the 2021 Marvel film Eternals, collaborating with Patrick Burleigh and the film’s director, Chloé Zhao.

Gal Gadot, in addition to acting, shall also be producing the film. She will be joined by her husband Jaron Varsano under their production company, Pilot Wave Motion Pictures. Also joining them are director Niki Caro and Marc Butan, under the banner of MadRiver Pictures.

Gadot's recent film releases include Disney's Snow White, and her forthcoming films include Julian Schnabel’s In the Hand of Dante and Kevin Macdonald’s The Runner. Her most recent production credit is for the 2023 film Heart of Stone.
