For the first time ever, an Amazon MGM Studios Germany-original film, Der Tiger, is getting a theatrical release before hitting Prime Video. As per Deadline, Der Tiger, an anti-war film set on the Eastern Front in 1943, will debut in select CineStar cinemas across Germany starting September 18. This is a significant move for Amazon, marking its first German-produced film to launch in local theaters before streaming.

Directed by Dennis Gansel, Der Tiger follows five German soldiers aboard a Tiger tank, navigating a secret mission far behind enemy lines. The soldiers are under the influence of Wehrmacht-issued methamphetamine, which pushes them deeper into paranoia and psychological chaos as they confront their own fears. The story turns from a military operation into a disturbing descent into madness.

The film stars David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky, and Yoran Leicher, with Tilman Strauß and André M. Hennicke in supporting roles. Producers Frank Kusche and Dan Maag partnered with Amazon MGM Studios Germany and Pantaleon Films to bring this to life.

Amazon’s German Originals head, Philip Pratt, called it “a special film” that deserved the big screen. It’s the first of its kind for the studio in the region.

The screenplay for Der Tiger was co-written by Dennis Gansel and Colin Teevan, and the film continues Gansel’s long-standing interest in German wartime psychology, something he explored earlier in Napola and The Wave.

This time, he turns the camera toward a five-man crew trapped in their own steel coffin—a Tiger tank—sent on a mission nobody fully understands. The setting is the Eastern Front in 1943, where the war had turned brutal and chaotic. The film’s core isn’t about military success or failure but the mental breakdown of soldiers driven by fear, guilt, and the influence of meth pills handed out by the Wehrmacht.

The cinematography is led by Carlo Jelavic, and from early descriptions, the visuals aim to put viewers inside the tight, grim space of the tank. Production design is handled by Nick Palmer, and the attention to detail in uniform textures and weapon interiors points to a grounded approach. Anke Winckler is behind the costume work, and Meg Tanner managed the hair and makeup, both crucial in selling the exhaustion and the mental crisis of the crew.

David Schütter leads the cast and is joined by Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky, and Yoran Leicher. Each actor plays a distinct role within the tank—not just functionally, but emotionally: one driven by duty, one questioning orders, and one losing the grip completely. Supporting roles by Tilman Strauß and André M. Hennicke add weight to the command structure that launched the doomed mission in the first place.

The film will run exclusively in CineStar theaters starting September 18 before heading to Prime Video later in the year. CineStar’s Oliver Fock confirmed they’re banking on strong word-of-mouth reception and are treating the theatrical window as a key promotional moment rather than an afterthought.
