Suzana Pires has written and is acting in another film adaptation of the Jorge Amado Portuguese classic, Tieta do Agreste, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The novel was first published in 1977, but the English version of it came out a few years later. After that, a TV adaptation was released in 1989, followed by a film adaptation in 1996.
As of this writing, Suzana Pires has appeared in a number of projects, including Wagner Moura's Elite Squad (2007), Casa Grande (2014), and more. Her writing credits include Caribbean Flower (2013), Rising Sun (2016-2017), Câncer com Ascendente em Virgem (2025), and more. Regarding the film, she said,
"Goal is to reimagine Tieta through a feminine lens."
She further explained that the idea was to show the character as
"a symbol of resilience and freedom"
Eliane Ferreira is producing the movie through her Muiraquitã Filmes. Before this, she has produced and is best known for Portrait of a Certain Orient (2024), Our Land, Our Freedom (2023), and Cine Marrocos (2018). Other than them, she was also a producer for projects like Cyclone (2025), The Scent of Things Remembered (2025), and more.
Then there's Joana Mariani, who is in the director's chair for this one. Her previously directed projects include Meu Sangue Ferve por Você - a Série (2024-2025), How to Be a Carioca (2023-present), Only for Love (2022), and more.
What will Suzana Pires' Tieta be about?

The story is well known among the fans of Jorge Amado, who passed away in 2001. The book currently holds 4.14 stars based on 1,529 ratings on Goodreads. Its synopsis reads,
"Banished for promiscuity, Tieta returns to the seaside village of Agreste after twenty-six years. Thinking she is now a rich, respectable widow, her mercenary family welcomes her with open arms. But Tieta is forced to reveal her true identity in order to save the town's beautiful beaches from ugly development. For the only way she can stop the factory is to call upon her close connections in Sao Paulo's highest political and financial circles - as only the Madam of the city's ritziest bordello can."
Since the upcoming Suzana Pires film is a remake, we can expect to see this same story here, too, while focusing on the titular character through a feminine lens, as Pires has explained.
Before Amado's Tieta was published, Amado had already published several books over a span of four decades. His first book, called The Country of Carnival, was published in 1931. After that, 21 more of his books were published before Tieta came to fruition.
His works include Captains of the Sands (1937), The Double Death of Quincas Water-Bray (1959), The Swallow and the Tomcat: A Love Story (1976), and more. His last novel, The Discovery of America by the Turks, was published in 1994, seven years before the author's demise.
Several of his works, including the ones mentioned here, were adapted into films and TV series. For example, Captains of the Sands was made into the 1971 film The Sandpit Generals. The Double Death of Quincas Water-Bray inspired the 1989 film called Weekend at Bernie's and its sequel.
