When Kylie Jenner reflected on one of her most talked-about fashion moments, she didn’t sound apologetic just honest. The beauty mogul opened up in a recent edition of Vogue’s Life in Looks series about the gown she wore to Hailey Bieber and Justin Bieber’s wedding.
Even years later, she hasn’t shuffled her decision under the carpet. She recalled the reaction and clearly stood by her choice while acknowledging the backlash and that she might dress differently today.
Kylie Jenner and the gold dress that sparked the buzz
At the star-studded wedding in South Carolina on September 30 2019, Jenner turned up in a one-shoulder gold foil gown by Australian label J’Aton Couture. The gown featured a thigh-high slit and a bold chest cut-out and she paired it with butterfly-themed accessories including a crystal butterfly hair pin and a matching clutch.
Once the photos went live, the internet exploded. Some fans praised the look, calling it “Greek-goddess of gold”, while others felt it tread dangerously close to upstaging the bride. One Twitter user wrote:
“You don’t show up to a wedding trying to look better than the bride just rude.”
In her interview, Jenner addressed the chatter:
“I think people were a little upset that I went all out,”
she said. She added with a laugh: “Hailey, call me if you have an issue.” She also admitted she “probably wouldn’t wear this now to someone’s wedding,” explaining that she simply assumed guests would “go all out.”
Despite the debate, Kylie Jenner stressed that there was no bad blood between her and Hailey the bride had no problem with the outfit, and Kylie genuinely enjoyed the evening, telling Vogue she “had one of the best nights” and that she was “one of the last ones to leave the wedding.”
In short, the gown became less about fabric and cut, and more about guest expectations, wedding etiquette and how far a bold outfit can travel before it clashes with tradition.
Kylie Jenner’s choice at Hailey and Justin’s wedding may have divided opinions, but she remains unapologetic. She acknowledges the criticism, recognises she might choose differently now and yet, she doesn’t regret that night. Sometimes a fashion moment isn’t just about style, but about making a statement. Jenner made hers.
