Former professional wrestler Sabu, whose real name was Terry Brunk, has passed away at the age of 60.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and WWE confirmed his death in a social media post on May 11, 2025. However, the cause of his death was not announced. Taking to X, it wrote:
“AEW and the wrestling world mourns the passing of Sabu. From barbed wire battles to unforgettable high-risk moments, Sabu gave everything to professional wrestling. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his fans.”
The news comes after Sabu competed in a retirement match against GCW star Joey Janela during WrestleMania weekend, which he won in the main event of the ninth annual Joey Janela's Spring Break, according to a report in The Independent. It was deemed as the final match of his career. Sabu was known for his hardcore style in ECW and WWE.

Tributes pour in as Sabu passes away
The wrestling world is in mourning following the death of Sabu. He was the pioneer of hardcore wrestling and the nephew of WWE Hall of Famer, The Sheik. Many of ECW’s most memorable matches saw Sabu clashing with WWE Hall of Famers Rob Van Dam and Mick Foley, alongside intense battles with The Sandman and his fiercest rival, Taz. “WWE is saddened to learn that Terry Brunk, known to wrestling fans as Sabu, has passed away. WWE extends its condolences to Sabu’s family, friends and fans.” WWE wrote on X.
“I would not have had the career that I have had, and I’ve been blessed to have, if it wasn’t for Sabu. That man got me over, and he didn’t have to get me over, and he did,” he said, noting that his death “breaks my heart.” Taz, ECW alum shared on X.
“I can’t believe this news. How tragic. Respect and condolences to Sabu. Heartbroken.” A fan wrote on X.
“THE Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death–Defying Maniac SABU!!!!” Another added.

“RIP Sabu innovator and absolute legend, sad to hear about his passing!” A user commented.

Sabu was known as a fearless wrestler who performed high-risk tasks and brutal matches for the sake of his fans. He often incorporated weapons like barbed wire, chairs, tables, and ladders into his bouts. He left an indelible mark on the wrestling industry, and will be dearly missed by all, especially his fans from the 90’s.
