The Odyssey director Christopher Nolan has always been a strong advocate of the big-screen experience of cinema. That's why he decided to share the first official teaser trailer for this anticipated project during the early theatrical screenings of Jurassic World Rebirth. He did something similar with his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, which debuted its teaser trailer alongside Jordan Peele's Nope (2022). That's because he values the theatrical experience and hopes to unveil his work only on the big screen.

Unfortunately, some impatient fans reportedly leaked the teaser for Nolan's film online before it could be shared by the official handles. It offered a glimpse at Nolan's vision for this Homeric adaptation with a star-studded cast of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, and Mia Goth, among others. The Odyssey is the first project to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras, which makes it all the more rewarding to watch in cinemas. However, some fans leaked it and revealed a few details about the journey of Telemachus, Odysseus's son.

What do we know about The Odyssey so far?

Christopher Nolan's follow-up to Oppenheimer is going to be just as grand an affair, as he has taken on the herculean task of adapting Homer's ancient poem into a cinematic epic. It has been one of the most anticipated projects since it was officially announced towards the end of 2024. Since then, the makers have maintained a mystery about its cast and characters and the way it will unfold as compared to the original text.

Fans have been eager to know as much as they can, but the studio has not revealed much so far. The production, which commenced in February 2025, is still underway across locations in Morocco, Italy, Greece, Iceland, and Scotland. By now, a few on-set photos have been leaked, revealing the look of characters played by Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, and Matt Damon behind the scenes.

Apart from these pictures, the fans got a glimpse at Damon's look as Odysseus, thanks to Universal Pictures, which has newly unveiled the first official poster for the film. It has piqued their interest in the project even more. So, they have been desperate to get an extended look at Nolan's epic through a teaser trailer.

What did the leaked teaser for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey reveal?

The leaked teaser trailer reportedly began with the following voiceover:

“Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.”

The latter part showed Holland's Telemachus asking Bernthal's yet-unnamed character about his father Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. In the clip, Telemachus said,

“I have to find out what happened to my father."

Bernthal's character reportedly addressed a room.

"Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned,” he proclaimed.

The clip ended with a person, presumably Odysseus, floating on a driftwood over the sea. Hopefully, we'll get an official peek into this world soon enough.

The Odyssey is scheduled to release on July 17, 2026.
