“He’s pretty mysterious”: Aziz Ansari describes working with Keanu Reeves on ‘Good Fortune’ movie

Aziz Ansari recounted his experience working with legendary actor Keanu Reeves on the movie Good Fortune. The 42-year-old actor, who made his directorial debut with the Good Fortune movie, told PEOPLE at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 that he wasn’t sure what to expect from Reeves, whom he cast in the film, as he viewed the actor as an enigma:

"You know, when you meet him, it's intimidating, because he's an icon of the screen and I grew up watching him and all his films, so it was pretty mind-blowing to get to meet him and then on top of that then work with him."

He added:

"He's now a great friend and collaborator. I didn't really know what to expect because he's pretty mysterious, you know? But he was just so game."

Keanu Reeves has built a resume as an action-movie actor with blockbusters like John Wick, The Matrix and 47 Ronin. Stereotypical roles notwithstanding, the 61-year-old actor jumped on the opportunity to star in a comedy directed by Aziz Ansari and featuring Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer:

"He was working with me and Seth, and we're such comedy guys, we're really comfortable in how we work.”

He continued:

“And he really just was game for everything. I told Seth at one point, 'Imagine if we had to do an action movie, how uncomfortable we'd be. [We'd go], wait, Keanu, what do we do, what do we do?' "

In Good Fortune, Keanu Reeves plays Gabriel, an inept angel-in-training who tries to prove himself to his superior, Martha played by Sandra Oh, and teaches a life lesson to Arj, a struggling Gig worker, played by Aziz Ansari and wealthy venture Capitalist Jeff, played by Seth Rogen.

Martha, Gabriel’s boss, is unimpressed by the Angel’s meddling in the lives of Arj and Jeff and removes the Angel’s wings until he fixes the mess he created.

Speaking with PEOPLE on the TIFF red carpet, Aziz Ansari recounted how Reeves accepted to play Gabriel and was shocked that the latter adapted into the character easily:

"And he really just was game for everything. I told Seth at one point, 'Imagine if we had to do an action movie, how uncomfortable we'd be. [We'd go], wait, Keanu, what do we do, what do we do?' "

Ansari praised Keanu Reeves’ acting prowess:

"He's such a pro, and he was just so down to play with us, and he's the soul of the movie, and he just does a wonderful job."

Good Fortune hits theatres on October 17, 2025.
