Heat 2 is finally happening. The sequel to the critically acclaimed 1995 film has been in development for more than three years now. After a stalemate between the original producer Warner Bros. and director Michael Mann over the budget of the sequel, the studio has let the project go.

Amazon MGM Studios-owned United Artists is now in discussion with Mann to bankroll the project. As per reports, Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to star in the film and play Chris Shiherlis, who was played by Val Kilmer in the original film.

Heat 2 is expected to be based on Mann and Meg Gardiner’s novel of the same name, which came out in August 2022. The book is set in different timelines, and its story serves both as a sequel and a prequel to the original film.

As per reports, Amazon MGM Studios will be financing and distributing Heat 2, and the cameras are expected to start rolling in 2026 with Michael Mann serving as the director. Apart from Leonardo DiCaprio, some other renowned actors are also said to be circling the project, including Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, and Austin Butler.

The film was initially announced in July 2022, with Warner Bros. and Michael Mann collaborating on the sequel. However, as per sources quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio capped the budget at $135 to $140 million, while Mann asked for at least $170 million to make the movie. After years of negotiations but no conclusion, Warner Bros. left the project in August this year, allowing Mann to shop it to other studios.

Jerry Bruckheimer is now going to serve as the producer on Heat 2, along with Mann, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt. Bruckheimer has previously given blockbusters like F1 and Top Gun: Maverick, while Stuber served as the head chairman of Netflix Films from 2017 to 2024. Nesbitt’s previous credits include The Electric State and Patriots Day.

Heat was released on December 15, 1995, and marked the first on-screen collaboration between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The film revolved around Neil McCauley, a professional thief played by De Niro, who wanted to carry out a last heist before retirement, but was being tracked down by LAPD Police Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, played by Pacino. The film also starred Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, Tom Sizemore as Michael Cheritto, Jon Voight as Nate, and Diane Venora as Justine Hanna.

While the plot details have been kept under wraps, Heat 2 will likely be based on Mann and Meg Gardiner’s novel, which follows detective Vincent Hanna’s early pursuit of ruthless criminal Otis Wardell and explores the rise of thieves Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis. It also reveals how Chris survives after the events of the original film.
