Helena Bonham Carter and ex Tim Burton's complete relationship timeline explored as actress shares rare insight into their years together

Helena Bonham Carter reflected on her romantic relationship with director Tim Burton in her new documentary titled Tim Burton: Life in the Line.

She described their time together as “definitely an adventure” and shared that Burton “drew her into existence” referencing his art and character designs. Speaking in her new docuseries, the 59-year-old star recalled that Burton was always sketching something no matter what is going around him.

She said,

“He literally draws his way through life. Even if he's with you, he would be sketching. Even through momentous occasions. I'd be having a child. He would still sketch. Literally giving birth. We’ve got our whole lives sketched. It was definitely an adventure shared. We went through 1000s of drawings before we decided to call it a day.”

The former couple were in a relationship for thirteen years and welcomed two children during their marriage. Despite their separation, Helena Bonham Carter spoke kindly of Burton emphasizing their strong co-parenting relationship with their kids.

Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton began their romantic relationship in 2001 after meeting on the set of Planet of the Apes.

Carter shared in her latest documentary, Tim Burton: Life in the Line as how the 67-year-old director pursued her for the film. As reported by E! News, she said:

“His first sentence to me was—he's got a very soft spoken gentle voice—‘I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but you're the first person I thought of to play the lead chimp in my movie Planet of the Apes.’ He said, ‘I have this feeling that you like to get away from what you look like.’ And I said, ‘You're absolutely right.’”

In the film, Helena Bonham Carter played the role of chimpanzee Ari. They walked the red carpet for the first time at the New York City premiere of the film before officially beginning their relationship.

Though the couple never married but became parents to two kids. Helena Bonham Carter welcomed her first child with Burton in 2003. They named their baby boy, Billy Raymond. Three years after his birth, she told E! News in an interview that she had been taking parenting classes to be a good mother. She told the outlet:

“I need to be a mom. It's much harder being a mom than an actress. They’re teaching me some really interesting things, like it’s not your job to know everything.”

The duo were blessed with their second child, a daughter named Nell. Later, in 2014, they ended their long-term relationship amicably. Their split was attributed to their lifestyle differences and emotional distance.

Reports indicated that Burton’s nocturnal habits and eccentric lifestyle contrasted with Carter’s preferences, which also contributed as one of the factors behind their separation.
