It’s official- Heartstopper's Nick and Charlie and their story aren't just continuing, they're graduating to the big screen. Yep, our favorite soft queer love story is coming back, but this time as a full-blown movie, and honestly? Emotions are already high.

After giving us two seasons of butterflies, breakdowns, and some of the most tender moments teen TV has seen in a long time, Heartstopper is ready to wrap things up with a feature-length film that promises to be just as healing, intimate, and unforgettable as the show. From Alice Oseman’s personal involvement in the script to the original cast returning (plus some exciting new twists), this isn’t just a movie, it’s a warm hug to the fans who’ve been here since the first spark.

So grab your tissues, plug in your fairy lights, and let’s get into everything you need to know about the Heartstopper movie, because if this is the final chapter, we’re making it count.

What is Heartstopper about?

Heartstopper is a British teen romance series based on Alice Oseman’s hit graphic novels, and it’s one of the rare shows that actually gets what it’s like to be young, confused, and in love. It follows Charlie Spring, a sweet, openly gay teenager still recovering from past bullying, and Nick Nelson, a golden-boy rugby player who surprises even himself when he starts catching feelings for Charlie. What begins as a casual seat assignment in class slowly turns into a life-changing connection.

The show explores topics like sexuality, gender identity, mental health, and the ups and downs of growing up, but it does so without turning everything into tragedy. Instead of treating queerness like a burden, it treats it like what it is: a part of life, full of awkward moments, joy, tension, and discovery.

Visually, it’s got a signature charm, with little animated sparks, leaves, and hearts pulled straight from the comics, making emotional beats feel even more magical. It also introduces a diverse ensemble of characters, including trans, asexual, and bisexual teens, all written with care and depth.

With two hit seasons and a movie on the way, Heartstopper isn’t just another teen drama. It’s a love letter to queer youth, and it’s changing the game.

What will the movie be about?

Alice Osman, author of the novels, who also serves as the creator of the series, talked about the studio's decision to end the saga with a feature film, as she told Tudum,

"It’s something totally new and unknown, and yes, the runtime will be less than a TV season. Even I needed some time to process and come to terms with the change. But once I began to see the entire vision, I knew it would be something even more beautiful than a regular season could achieve. We are feeling very ambitious about what is possible in a movie format. With no need for end-of-episode cliff-hangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality to create something memorable, sophisticated, and atmospheric."

Sure, the film will be shorter and will be less detailed, as is true for most cinematic adaptations, but it still sounds like a fitting ending to one of our favorite Achillean couples on screen. Continuing about what the film will aim to give fans, Osman added,

"The film will wrap up Nick and Charlie’s journey. After Season 3, the couple is inseparable. But, with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, Nick and Charlie’s friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on."

Which book will the Heartstopper movie be based on?

The final addition to the franchise will be based on Alice Osman's sixth novel in the series, which she is still working on. This means that the finale-cum-feature film will be completely unexpected, which is usually not the case in most instances where novels that are adapted to the screen have been out for years. Osman elaborated on the writing process behind the sixth volume as she told Tudum,

"I spent the first few months of 2024 writing the story and dialogue for Heartstopper Volume 6, and I’ve been drawing the pages since last June. I’m currently just over halfway through drawing the book. I hope to finish drawing it by the end of the year … though I’m not sure if I’ll be successful. But I’ll try my best. When I started planning this final book, I told myself I was allowed to include anything and everything I’d always wanted to explore with these characters. I’m proud to say that’s what I’ve been doing."

She then teased what the story would be about as she added,

"Among many things, it explores Charlie finding a new sense of confidence and independence, and healing from some of his old demons. Meanwhile, Nick has a bit of a crisis about his future, influenced by memories of his past."

Kit Connor and Joe Locke are the only officially confirmed cast members for the upcoming movie, and they’re not just starring but also executive producing. Connor first hinted at the project in an April 2025 interview with Vogue, saying he was open to a finale “as long as it’s done right.” Netflix later confirmed the film, promising a heartfelt conclusion to Nick and Charlie’s journey.

While the full cast hasn’t been announced, familiar faces like Elle, played by Yasmin Finney, Tao, played by William Gao, and Isaac, played by Tobie Donovan, are likely to return. According to Netflix’s Tudum, the gang will continue navigating love and friendship, and growing up, which means the supporting characters will most likely return.

The film will be directed by Wash Westmoreland, with Alice Oseman writing the script and serving as executive producer alongside Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Euros Lyn, and the two leads. Filming is set to begin in summer 2025. More details are awaited for now.

All three seasons of Heartstopper are available to stream on Netflix.
