Mountainhead is a satirical comedy film that was released on HBO and Max on 31st May 2025. It is a story about four tech billionaires enjoying a retreat in the mountains while the world around them falls apart. Written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, Mountainhead clearly portrays elite tech entrepreneurs trying to make a profit while society and democracy as we know them crumble.
I have noticed some parallels between the film and real life. After all, technology is taking us to an uncertain future, with the CEOs thinking only of their profit and taking almost no accountability. The characters of Mountainhead seem a little familiar, and I think they might be inspired by real-life people.

Real-life people who might have inspired the Mountainhead characters
While Jesse Armstrong has not confirmed that the protagonists Venis Parish, Jeff Abredazi, Randall Garrett, and Hugo Van Yalk have been inspired by real-life people, I've noticed some parallels. However, I cannot say anything for sure since an official confirmation is yet to come.
In Mountainhead, Venis Parish, played by Cory Michael Smith, leads a tech company responsible for the AI that causes a major societal collapse. While the other billionaires blame him for the downfall, Venis remains unfazed. He believes that a fast collapse is actually a good thing, as it will force society to quickly adapt to and learn how to manage artificial intelligence.
I think Venis might be inspired by real-life tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. His tone, awkward moments, and controversial opinions feel very familiar. The similarities go beyond personality. Venis's connection to AI mirrors Musk’s own role in developing AI tools like Grok and the frequent changes he brings to the platform X. Although the creators haven’t confirmed this association, the character seems to draw a clear parallel.
Another protagonist in Mountainhead is Randall Grant, portrayed by Steve Carell. Randall is the most senior and wealthiest of the group, often taking on a leadership role among the billionaires. I think his focus on venture capital and futuristic ideas resembles Peter Thiel, the former CEO of PayPal. Besides, I believe that Randall’s interest in transferring his consciousness into technology also echoes Thiel’s public interest in life extension.
Ramy Youssef plays Jeff, a younger tech billionaire. I don't think Jeff represents just one real-life person, but he shares traits with several people. His youth and competitive tension with Venis remind me of Mark Zuckerberg and his well-known rivalry with Musk. At the same time, Jeff seems to borrow elements from other tech leaders like Sam Altman, making him a blend of several tech entrepreneurs.
Jason Schwartzman's character, Hugo Van Yalk, is the odd one out in Mountainhead. Unlike the others, he has not made a billion dollars yet and doesn’t have the same influence but does have a net worth of over five hundred million.
He often tries to gain favor with Randall but is mostly seen as awkward and desperate. I could not associate Hugo with any real-life figures. Instead, I feel that his role highlights how those with less power try to fit in with the elite and how the elite, in turn, do not consider someone they consider lesser than them their own.
Irrespective of whether the protagonists of the film are inspired by real-life people, Mountainhead cleverly uses its characters to reflect the power and impact tech leaders have on the world. I think it is interesting how the show sheds light on the reality of how those with the most power, money, and influence will probably just sit and watch while the rest of humanity suffers and even try to profit from it.
Mountainhead is currently streaming on Max.
