A24's Heretic brought Hugh Grant back to the screen in a terrifying avatar. He played Mr. Reed, a middle-aged man who comes across two young Mormon missionaries, hoping to convert them. Their seemingly ordinary conversation slowly turns into a deceptive game of cat-and-mouse in this psychological horror film.

The film was written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. It premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival two months before its theatrical release in November. The cast also includes Sophie Thatcher (Companion) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans) in the central roles.

The film received widely favorable reviews, which pointed out its remarkable world-building. Much of its credit goes to its filming locations in Vancouver, Squamish, and Pitt Meadows. Overall, the production design, sound design, and cinematography in these locations helped the film be creepy and dreadful.

Heretic mainly takes place in Mr. Reed's house, which is situated in the middle of the woods. However, there are a few other places that the characters inhabit. Some of the scenes take place in a church, while some others take place on a city's streets.

Based on the reports from British Columbia's Creative BC, three real-life locations in this Canadian province were used for its filming. Its principal photography reportedly took place from October 3 to November 16, 2023, in Vancouver. Below is the detailed information of all its filming locations.

1) Pitt Meadows

The film's producer, Julia Glausi, spoke with The Abbotsford News about the use of the sound stages in Pitt Meadows, mainly for shooting the film's indoor scenes. These soundproof spaces helped elevate the film's horror.

"The stages we used in Pitt Meadows had an incredible amount of office space that we were able to use, and Phil and his team had a whole wing to themselves. All of these empty offices became rooms that were dedicated to very specificpieces of the set."

She further added,

"There was one office that was just dedicated to doorknob research. There's one shot of this doorknob that is really important and that whole office became ideas and different directions on little tiny pieces of texture like doorknobs on the set."

2) Squamish, Canada

Squamish is a small, scenic town near Vancouver. It offers long spaces of lush greenery, which contrasts with the city's sleek structures. The locations in Squamish offer a sense of desolation, away from the cityscapes that help the film with its intended psychological effect. It might have been used to show the exterior of Mr. Reed's house, filled with trees.

3) Vancouver, Canada

Besides the Pitt Meadows sound stages, some locations in Vancouver, Canada, were used for the exterior shots in Heretic, according to producer Julia Glausi. During her conversation with a British Columbian newspaper journalist, she mentioned,

"We had about five or six days of exteriors, which was all over the Vancouver area."

The streets in Vancouver were used to film Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East's characters before they reached Mr. Reed's lonesome house. The filming also took place in St. James Anglican Church in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, potentially to show the film's young missionaries inside a church.

Heretic is now available to stream on Max.
