It looks like Rian Johnson will not return to the galaxy far, far away with his highly anticipated Star Wars trilogy, initially announced in 2017. The American filmmaker created the second installment of the franchise's sequel trilogy, The Last Jedi, in 2017, which received mixed reviews from audiences. Johnson is currently gearing up for the upcoming release of Wake Up Dead Man, the third installment in his beloved Knives Out franchise.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson expressed his love for the franchise:
“A part of my brain will always be in Star Wars. It’s so much a part of me and the way I think.”
While the filmmaker did not give an update or response about the trilogy, the media outlet called that plan 'effectively dead'. This will surely disappoint many fans who were anticipating a positive update on Johnson's Star Wars trilogy. It looks like the project has been added to the list of movies in the franchise that never saw the light of day.
More on this in our story.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy faces another disappointing development
After Johnson hinted that his Lucasfilm sci-fi universe trilogy is 'dead', another media outlet notes how the project was not mentioned at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced the roster of upcoming movies by directors James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Dave Filoni and many more (at the event), with no mention of Rian Johnson's trilogy.
While this was a hint enough for fans, it looks like Johnson's vision for the sci-fi opera franchise will never come to fruition.
In his recent interview, Johnson also reflected on his time making The Last Jedi back in 2017:
“We made that movie in this beautiful, fearless little bubble, and the reality is, once you dive in and start doing the creative work, there isn’t a lot of room in your head for the notion of external pressure.''
While the movie was the highest-grossing film of its year and received positive reviews from critics, audiences were divided, especially because of Johnson's unique take on the franchise and legacy characters like Luke Skywalker. Some fans were not appreciative of how Johnson presented Luke as a disillusioned hermit who has given up on his friends and the Jedi. However, many fans appreciated his choice to subvert the long-held fan expectations and provide a new vision for Star Wars.
Hate it or love it but it looks like Rian Johnson's vision for the galaxy far, far away will not come alive on the big screen anymore.
Rian Johnson's collaboration with Lucasfilm was highly anticipated and marketed as a new era in the franchise but they have since gone their separate ways. While Star Wars is gearing up for its upcoming movies, The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter, Johnson is gearing up to present the world with the next installment in his Knives Out Mystery, scheduled to release on December 12 on Netflix.
