Home Alone turned 35 this year: Here’s a then-and-now look at the cast

Home Alone is a film in the Christmas comedy genre directed by Chris Columbus. It's written and produced by John Hughes and was released theatrically on November 16, 1990. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:

"Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister makes the most of the situation after his family unwittingly leaves him behind when they go on Christmas vacation. When thieves try to break into his home, he puts up a fight like no other."

The film recently completed 35 years since its release. On this occasion, let's take a look at the film's star cast and where they are now.

1) Macaulay Culkin as Kevin

Macaulay Culkin plays the role of Kevin in Home Alone. He is an eight-year-old boy who is left behind by his family as they go for vacations. In the movie, Kevin has to protect himself and his house from two thieves.

Culkin is 45 years old now and continues to work as an actor. He has done films like Adam Green's Aladdin, and Changeland, as well as the television series American Horror Story and Fallout.


2) Joe Pesci as Harry

Joe Pesci plays a thief named Harry in the film. After Home Alone, Pesci reprised his role in the sequel and continued to work as an actor. He acted in titles like Casino, The Irishman, and The Good Shephard among many others. Pesci took a hiatus from acting and announced his return with a title called Day of the Fight, which was released in 2023.


3) Catherine O'Hara as Kate

Catherine O'Hara portrays Harry's mother, Kate. The Canadian actor went on to appear in films like A Mighty Wind, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Elemental. Catherine's big resurgence happened with CBC's sitcom Schitt's Creek for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe.


4) Other cast members of the film

John Candy, who played Gus Polinski, passed away in 1994. Daniel Stern portrayed the other thief, Marv. He acted in projects like Shrill and For All Mankind. But he quit the limelight and started living on a California farm. John Hear, who played Kevin's father, passed away in 2017.

Home Alone was shot by Julio Macat, while Raja Gosnell was the editor of the film. John Williams composed the film's background score. The film had a sneak preview on November 10 and it was released theatrically on November 16, 1990. It became a big critical and commercial success.

In a Deadline interview, Culkin recalled his memories of shooting the film:

"I remember being in the lobby of the school we filmed in — it was the same Chicago high school we used for Uncle Buck. There was a poster up in the lobby, and you walked by it and saw all over it that Warner Brothers owned it. And one day I showed up for work when we were in preproduction. It wasn’t there. By the afternoon, it was back and Fox was on it. No kidding."

A sequel titled Home Alone 2: Lost in New York came out in 1992.
