Netflix has recently dropped a documentary film Avicii: I'm Tim on late Swedish DJ and world famous artist Avicii (also going by the name of Tim Bergling). Avicii made his debut with an electronic dance music album in 2008 that garnered international attention within a short time.

Over the years, he got nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and soon his music reached out to masses with chart-topping hits. Avicii's 2013 single Wake Me Up still resonates among his fans and was also at the No. 4 spot on the Billboard 100. But, he took a break in 2016 over physical and mental health issues, per reports from People Magazine. Two years later, on April 20, 2018, he died at the age of 28 in Muscat, Oman.

On May 1, 2018, TMZ reported that the cause of his death was by suicide due to self-inflicted injuries with a broken wine bottle, with Bergling ultimately dying of blood loss.

The latest docu-film Avicii: I'm Tim, directed by Henrik Burman, provided glimpses of the musician's personal struggle since 2016.

Avicii: I'm Tim premiered globally on Netflix on December 31, 2024. Initially, the documentary was set for a 2023 release, but was later moved ahead by a year, as confirmed by an official announcement on Avicii's Instagram handle. The docu-movie was also screened at the Stockholm Film Festival in 2024.

What is the documentary Avicii: I'm Tim about?

Avicii: I'm Tim director Henrik Burman reportedly said in a statement:

"When I determined that he’d be the one who’d narrate this story, I thought that maybe it was how I could be close to him. Maybe that’s how I can meet him."

The documentary film has revealed footage from the early years of Avicii's musical journey. His unique approach to music and the importance of melody in his work have been highlighted all throughout the piece.

As seen on Netflix's latest documentary, Avicii's advent into the world of music started with his close friend Filip “Philgood” Åkesson. The film has covered scenes from his final performance at Ushuaïa Ibiza on August 28, 2016. Burman further added:

"When you’ve seen this film, you want to also feel who Avicii was on stage. It’s his last show, but it’s such a happy feel around it."

As seen on Avicii: I'm Tim, Avicii aka Tim was finding it difficult to handle fame and was often under pressure as to what his identity as an artist was. Balancing his personal life with his professional career reportedly left him in overwhelming situations.

At that moment, an intervention was organized by Avicii's father Klas Bergling and collaborator and manager Arash “Ash” Pournouri. He was supported by his family and close friends during the moment of emotional crisis.

A voiceover from Avicii in his biopic goes:

"I just felt anxious. I didn’t know where the anxiety came from. I could feel it physically in my gut. It was like a stone in my gut, that’s how it felt. And it was constant. A constant emotion."

As per reports, he also consulted psychiatrists and medical experts which led to a change in his day-to-day routine. He was no longer going on high-intensity tours like he used to in his early years of professional career.

Avicii's father Klas has reportedly recalled in a statement on the docu-film, saying:

"As he approached, he could see all of us there. It was excruciatingly painful to see the look in his eyes. Oh man, that was really rough. Then everyone shared how concerned they were, and Tim… at first, he was pretty furious."

As seen on Netflix, the initial conversations showcased how Tim would not open up so much to people. Klas continued:

"He refused to give in. But eventually, something made him say, ‘Fine, I’ll get help.’ I said, ‘Okay, thank you.’ It finally registered. We were thrilled. It got through to him. I think he realized it was time for him to do something about it."

The changes and medical help turned things around a bit for him in 2017, following which he started working on his last album, Tim. It was released posthumously in 2019. While producing some of his final songs, Avicii reportedly reflected on the time, saying:

"I felt really happy. I was free."'

Avicii: I'm Tim is currently streaming on Netflix.
