The Avengers series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is finally taking off after a five-year halt. Both Anthony and Joe Russo are returning as directors after their 2019 blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame, to helm the two upcoming sequels, Doomsday and Secret Wars. Both films will be part of the MCU's Phase Six and are scheduled to release on December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively.

Amid rising anticipation, the makers have revealed the estimated runtime of both films. The sequel has a runtime similar to that of Endgame, which remains one of the longest films in the MCU.

Russo brothers reveal Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars runtime

In March 2025, the Russo brothers spoke to Collider, where they revealed the estimated runtime of their forthcoming films, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Joe Russo said:

"If I were a betting man, I would say the first one is two and a half, and the second one's three hours."

The duo's earlier film in the franchise, Endgame, has a runtime of 182 minutes, making it the longest MCU film to date. The combined duration of the upcoming two films would be around five and a half hours.

Avengers: Doomsday is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, while the Russos have produced it with Marvel chief Kevin Feige. It will be the 39th MCU entry and the fifth in the Avengers series after the first one, Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and Endgame.

In 2022, Marvel announced Secret Wars along with a film with Kang the Conqueror as its main antagonist. Titled The Kang Dynasty, the film was supposed to feature the superheroes going against the villain (played by Jonathan Major). However, the actor's legal issues led the studio to drop him from the project. The film underwent an overhaul and was reworked into Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. will be portraying Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom in the film. He was Tony Stark/Iron Man in the earlier phases of the MCU. Some of the cast members of the film include:

  • Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom
  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man
  • Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman
  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • Tom Hiddleston as Loki
  • Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic

The initial release date of Doomsday was May 2, 2025, but it was pushed back to May 1, 2026, due to the 2023 Hollywood strike. After another delay, it was finalized to get a release on December 18, 2026. Its sequel, Secret Wars, is set to be released on December 17, 2027, marking the conclusion of the sixth phase of the MCU.
