James Wan introduced the first film from The Conjuring universe in 2013 and followed it up three years later with a sequel, The Conjuring 2, which centered around the Enfield case. It has been nearly a decade since Warner Bros. Pictures brought this supernatural horror sequel to the theaters, but some fans are still puzzled by one of its crucial plot points.

To preface, the 2013 film centered on demonologists Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson), investigating a case inspired by the real-life Amityville Horror tale. The mystery revolved around an accused witch named Bathsheba Sherman, who haunted the Perron family as they moved into their new house.

It offered a look into the cases involving the Annabelle doll, followed by the haunted music box from the Perron family's home, which became a part of the artifacts from paranormal cases where they helped those in need of their expertise. The Conjuring 2 primarily analyzed the haunting events involving the Hodgson family.

By the end of The Conjuring 2, Lorraine Warren figured out that Valak is the demon who was haunting them. However, it may not have been clear to some viewers how she figures out this truth. The answer lies in a few clues throughout the movie, including Lorraine's visions besides the name written in her Bible.

Let's unpack the chain of events.

Before diving into the specifics of Lorraine's discovery, let us briefly recap how she ends up investigating the case of the Hodgsen family. The Hodgsens live in a house in Enfield, England, where they start experiencing some strange incidents tracing back to Janet, one of their four daughters. Based on the observations, she is said to have been possessed.

Lorraine and Ed were expected to investigate whether the said possession is true or a hoax. The case had already attracted the local media's attention, which increased the responsibility on the Warrens to discover what was happening and help the young girl from the entity that had been haunting her to no end.

Earlier, Janet was said to be possessed by Bill Wilkins, an elderly man who once lived on the land where her family resided at the time of the possession. While following Lorraine's investigation, it also followed her personal narrative, as she was haunted by visions that teased Ed's death in the presence of a mysterious nun.

After The Conjuring 2, the nun becomes the central character in the Conjuring spin-off series named after her, analyzing Valak's nature. However, before that, Lorraine discovers the demon's truth through the name she scratched in her Bible after a horrifying vision of the demonic nun and her husband, Ed.

The nun obstructs Lorraine's abilities, stopping her from knowing the truth behind Janet's possession. Based on what The Conjuring 2 revealed through its foreshadowing, Lorrain learns the truth based on a couple of hints, including the name she scratches out after a haunting vision. She addresses the demon by its name and condemns it to hell, thus rescuing Janet from the nightmare.
