Jake Schreier's Thunderbolts* is winning over the MCU fans as we speak, and it hardly comes as a surprise considering the level of care and attention put into this tentpole project. It made mental health the highest priority of its story and paid off the makers more than well. The fans are seeing it as Marvel's return to form. Even before the MCU dealt with such topics (like Thor around the time of Avengers: Endgame). However, their emotional pain was not dealt with sincerely as it is now.
Another reason the MCU fans are loving Thunderbolts* is the team of battered and bruised antiheroes it brings together. This team-up has opened them up to more possibilities for similar groups to enter this cinematic universe. By now, it's not news that Thunderbolts* has been declared the New Avengers. However, that doesn't stop the MCU fans from coming up with different possibilities. One of these being brought to notice is Luke Cage's potential appearance in this team.
Can Luke Cage be a part of the MCU's Thunderbolts? Well, Marvel Comics has shown Cage connected with this moniker at least sometimes. So, the Marvel execs might find a way to bring this team. Let's discuss the theories.
Should Luke Cage be a part of Thunderbolts*? Here's what the Marvel fans have to say
On a Reddit thread, a user asked if Luke Cage should be a part of this team, and Marvel fans sure had some passionate reactions about it. One of the comments said:
"Nah. New Avengers eventually. Put him on the big team."
Another user said they would love to see Luke Cage on the team, but the project should then retain the "personal" feeling about its setting:
"I hope so! I really enjoyed Luke Cage. But also because, like Jessica Jones, the story and the world around him felt small but personal (everyday life in Harlem), which I like. I hope they don't lose that feeling when he gets 'upgraded'."
Someone else said that this may not happen:
"Yea that would be cool but I don't expect that to be the plan"
Another user instead pointed out their concern about the cliffhanger from the second season that revolves around Luke Cage:
"I hope the cliffhanger of Luke Cage s2 gets addressed one day"
How can Luke Cage fit in the new MCU by joining Thunderbolts*: Theory explored
Thunderbolts* ended with showing this new team being declared the New Avengers after Val's plan with Sentry failed shortly after it began. The post-credit scene showed them a few months later proudly working together with the new title. This means some other heroes can probably take over their old moniker. In Jake Schreier's movie, the team used it because of its connection to Yelena's childhood. However, there can be other reasons someone else might decide to take it over, even Harrison Ford's Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, for that matter.
One of these takers can be Luke Cage, according to the 2022 Marvel Comic that showed Luke Cage trying to protect New York with his team. That can also tie in with the fan theories about Daredevil: Born Again's second season, expected to show Wilson Fisk / Kingpin going further with his anti-vigilante and anti-superhero legislation. So, a potential Thunderbolts team-up can include the likes of Monica Rambeau, America Chavez, and Hawkeye fighting alongside Luke to keep New York a safe place to live. That can also allow the actors to reprise these roles from their previous MCU entries.
